Asperg is located in the Stuttgart region between the Neckar and Enz rivers in the Strohgäu , which is part of the Neckar Basin natural area . The landscape characterizes the Hohenasperg by its location and its characteristic shape as an isolated, about 90 meters high Keuper mountain with a broad plateau and steep slopes to the north, east and south. In the west it runs out flatter on the Hurst . In the otherwise moderately hilly surroundings of Langen field by is inverted relief resulting witnesses mountain visible from afar. For example, from the A 81 to the right of the direction of travel when approaching Ludwigsburg from the north.
The municipal area, which was reduced in the course of the founding of Ludwigsburg, still covers 580 hectares and extends from 241 to 356 meters above sea level. Today it borders on the markings of Tamm , Ludwigsburg , Möglingen and Markgröningen .

history
Until the 19th century
The history of the city is closely linked to the Hohenasperg. In pre-Christian times, around 500 BC Was the Hohenasperg Fliehburg and probably a powerful early Celtic power center. Numerous Celtic graves in the vicinity are arranged in such a way that you have a clear view of the Hohenasperg from them, for example the large barrow near Hochdorf or the grave site on the Katharinenlinde near Schwieberdingen . A particularly good view of the Hohenasperg is provided by the Kleinaspergle barrow on the southern edge of Asperg , dated around 440 BC. During his excavation in 1879, Oskar Fraas came across impressive finds in a side chamber, for example a Celtic jug, golden drinking horn ends and Greek bowls. Another magnificent tomb from the Celtic era, dated to 500 BC. Chr., Was discovered by Hartwig Zürn during construction work in the Grafenbühl area in 1964. Unique pieces were also found here, for example two sphinxes carved from bone , one of them with an amber face . The Asperger finds are in the Landesmuseum Württemberg in Stuttgart. In addition, around 400 settlements were found in the vicinity of Hohenasperg.
Use of the exposed mountain by the Alamanni and Franks can be assumed, but not proven with certainty. An identification of the Ascis mentioned in the Cosmographia of the geographer of Ravenna around the year 700 as Asperg is questionable.
Asperg was first mentioned in a document as early as 819, when Gaugraf Gozbert donated his property there to the Weissenburg monastery in Alsace. In the High Middle Ages, the castle and settlement belonged to the Count Palatine of Tübingen . A sideline of the Count Palatine was named after Asperg. However, the place only gained greater importance with the establishment of the city of Hohenasperg, which was first documented in 1304 and was independent until 1909, with its own city justice. In 1308 Württemberg acquired Asperg including the castle by purchase. The history of the city has always been influenced by the turbulent turmoil of the wars. In particular, the sieges of the fortress by the Swabian Federation in 1519 - recorded in a pen drawing by Albrecht Dürer - and during the Thirty Years' War were devastating. In 1510, Asperg received a new town charter from Duke Ulrich von Württemberg , which was comparable to that of the second royal seat of Tübingen. From 1534 the fortress was expanded and the town was moved from Hohenasperg to the foot of the mountain in Weihenberg, now called Unterasperg. “Asperg Castle and Village” currently belonged to the Grüningen office (see map).
When Ludwigsburg was founded, Asperg lost its town charter in 1714. In 1718 Asperg was incorporated into the Oberamt Ludwigsburg , but only 17 years later it became the seat of its own office again. In 1781 it was reintegrated into the Oberamt Ludwigsburg, which remained final after the implementation of the new administrative structure in the Kingdom of Württemberg . After a long struggle, town charter was granted again in 1875, which has remained unchanged since then.
In the 19th century there was a huge shift in the entire economic and transport life. Until then, Asperg was dominated by farmers and wine growers. The only branch of industry was gypsum extraction, which was first mentioned in a document in the 14th century. In 1859 there were nine gypsum mills on site. In 1847, Asperg was connected to the rail traffic of the Württemberg State Railways by the new Ludwigsburg – Bietigheim railway line . The residential area then grew more and more towards the train station , which was initially outside . As a result, significant branches of industry developed and established, such as For example, the first Eisfink refrigerator factory in Württemberg or the Streicher steel foundry from Stuttgart-Bad Cannstatt, as well as a furniture industry from small beginnings.
Since 1894 there has been a prison (Invalidenanstalt) on the Hohenasperg for civil penal execution.
20th and 21st centuries
From 1914 to 1918 Hohenasperg Fortress was a prisoner of war camp, from 1920 to 1945 it was a branch prison of Ludwigsburg. During the Nazi era (1933–1945) opponents of the regime were imprisoned and the buildings were used as assembly camps for deportations. In May 1940 there was also a collection point for " gypsies " who were recorded in lists of names and examined in terms of "racial hygiene". From the Asperg train station, they were deported by trains to the ghettos and concentration camps in occupied Poland. A memorial plaque has existed at Asperg train station since 1995, reminding of the deportation.
In 1942 a tuberculosis ward was set up and a small cemetery of its own on the northern slope of the mountain.
The administrative reform of April 25, 1938 during the Nazi era in Württemberg led to membership in the Ludwigsburg district .
In the final phase of the Second World War, Asperg became a theater of war and the location of artillery positions. Asperg was attacked by Allied airmen for the first time on April 10, 1945, in which two houses and five barns were set on fire and six residents were killed. A total of twelve residents were killed during the fighting. Asperg was briefly occupied by the French from April 21, 1945 and then came under American military administration from mid-July 1945.
As part of the American zone of occupation , Asperg came to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952.
From 1945 to 1947 there was an internment camp for denazification and re-education on the Hohenasperg. Hohenasperg has been a state penal institution since 1948, and has housed the central hospital for the Baden-Württemberg penal system since 1950 and the Baden-Württemberg social therapeutic institution since 1975.
At the end of the 20th century there were repeated considerations for a cultural use of the mountain and the fortress. The Museum Hohenasperg - A German Prison , a branch museum of the House of History Baden-Württemberg, has existed in the Arsenal building since July 16, 2010 . In the outer gate tower there is an inn The Schubartstube . Today the Hohenasperg is also a popular tourist destination because of its panoramic view.
After the Second World War, Asperg's population was 4,700. This rose to 12,000 in the 1970s and is around 13,000 today. Numerous residential areas emerged during this time. At the beginning of the 21st century, the city center was completely redesigned. In view of its good location, the very good infrastructure and the family-friendly offer, Asperg is still a popular place to live today.
Population development
The population has increased steadily since 1856, reached a preliminary high in 2011 and in 2013 was 13,107.

Geotextile was later installed in the subsoil to prevent further sagging. The outdoor pool, which was modernized at the beginning of the millennium, offers a heated swimmer's pool with a diving platform, a non-swimmer pool with a slide and a swimming channel, as well as a beautiful parent-child area with awning, water splash figures, etc. In the entrance area there is a spacious dining area with outdoor dining under large parasols.
