Geographical location

The municipality of Hemmingen is located in the heart of the Strohgau between 270 and 384 meters above sea level. It is located about 8 kilometers northwest of Stuttgart .

history

middle Ages

Cemeteries are known from the early Middle Ages, including an aristocratic necropolis and a row grave field, which suggests an early settlement of Hemmingen. At the time of the Carolingians in the 9th century, the Alsatian monastery in Weißenburg was wealthy locally. Hemmingen was first mentioned in a document in 991. From the 13th to the 15th century, the Bebenhausen monastery owned considerable property in Hemmingen.

Early modern age

For many centuries, Hemmingen's history was shaped by the fact that rule over the place had been divided between the nobility of the castle and estate and the Württemberg state rule since the 14th century . After the Lords of Hemmingen died out, the local lords of Nippenburg were the first to rule . In 1650, Duke Eberhard III. the place Hemmingen to Johann Konrad Varnbuler as a fief, since Varnbuler had rendered great services as the Württemberg ambassador in the negotiations for the peace of Westphalia . Thus the local rule was now with the Varnbuler family.

Since the establishment of the Kingdom of Württemberg

Hemmingen belonged to the Württemberg Office of Leonberg and remained assigned to the Oberamt Leonberg even after the establishment of the Kingdom of Württemberg . Through the work of Karl von Varnbuler as finance minister and his son Karl of the same name as the leading Württemberg minister, Hemmingen was known nationwide in Württemberg. In 1906 the Württemberg branch lines connected Hemmingen to rail traffic with the opening of the Strohgäubahn . The administrative reform during the Nazi era in Württemberg led to membership in the Leonberg district in 1938 .

post war period

In 1945 the place became part of the American zone of occupation and thus belonged to the newly founded state of Württemberg-Baden , which was incorporated into the current state of Baden-Württemberg in 1952. In the post-war years, a visible development took place in Hemmingen. First of all, a large new building area was built south of the old village center, forming a semicircle around the old town. Since the late 1960s, there have been several construction phases for residential houses in the east and northwest of the old village center. In the southwest of the place an extensive industrial area was created. In 1973 the district reform took place in Baden-Württemberg , when Hemmingen became part of the Ludwigsburg district. Hemmingen and Schwieberdingen have been linked in the Schwieberdingen-Hemmingen municipal administration association since 1974.

Religions

Until the Reformation, Hemmingen belonged to the diocese of Speyer and was subordinate to the Land Chapter Grüningen in the Archdiaconate of Trinity. In 1534 the Protestant Duke Ulrich ordered that all of Württemberg, and with it Hemmingen, should be Protestant from now on. Only the local lords of Nippenburg at the time remained Catholic and continued to celebrate private Catholic masses in the castle.

The Protestant parish of Hemmingen today has a good 3,000 members. It belongs to the church district of Ditzingen of the Evangelical Church in Württemberg . The services are held in the Laurentiuskirche. In addition, parties can be held in the parish hall after renting. Church festivals are also often celebrated there. The ejh (Evangelical Youth Hemmingen) is responsible for youth work.

The Catholic parish of Hemmingen consists of around 1900 parishioners. It forms a parish with Münchingen and a pastoral care unit with Korntal (parish office there) in the Ludwigsburg dean's office in the Rottenburg-Stuttgart diocese . The Catholic parish has had its own St. Georg church with a community center since 1959.

There is also a congregation of the New Apostolic Church in Hemmingen.

In addition, around 400 to 500 Muslims live in Hemmingen.

Heinrich Rathfelder (1922–1985) was mayor of Hemmingen from 1948 to 1978. He was followed by Werner Nafz (born April 13, 1944; FW ), who held the office from March 12, 1978 to March 11, 2010. His term of office expired due to age. Thomas Schäfer (born January 11, 1982; CDU ) was elected as his successor on February 7, 2010 and was introduced to his office on March 12, 2010. The re-election took place on December 17, 2017. Schäfer was confirmed in office with over 96%.

The municipal coat of arms shows an upright blue rust in gold with a handle pointing downwards. The rust is the martyr attribute of the Hemmingen church patron, St. Laurentius . The municipal flag is blue and yellow and was awarded on April 15, 1980.

Choirs

The trumpet choir of the Protestant parish, founded in 1946, is an independent association and had around 20 active members in 2016.

The Spielmanns- und Fanfarenzug Hemmingen eV has existed since 1952 . V. , who has already done major tours abroad (e.g. 2003 at the invitation of China at the “Shanghai International Arts Festival”).

Sports

There are several sports clubs in Hemmingen. GSV Hemmingen offers various popular sports, including football, handball, tennis and table tennis. The Laurentiuskirche is the oldest building in the village and is located in the center of the village on the market square and next to the castle. The Kaiserstein (Hemmingen) is a roughly six meter high stone south of Hemmingen at 9 ° 2 ′ 10 ″ east longitude and 48 ° 51 ′ 30 ″ north latitude in Württemberg, which commemorates the visit of Kaiser Wilhelm I in 1885 to the castle of Hemmingen . The Protestant Youth Hemmingen (ejh) was founded in 2007 as an independent youth organization within the Protestant parish.

The Strohgäubahn has existed since 1906 and runs every half hour on weekdays and every hour on weekends between Ditzingen-Heimerdingen and Korntal . As line RB 47, it belongs to the Stuttgart transport and tariff association and is operated by the Strohgäubahn association, to which the Ludwigsburg district and the neighboring communities of Ditzingen, Hemmingen, Schwieberdingen and Korntal-Münchingen belong. The electricity and gas network in the community is operated by EnBW Regional AG. The Hemminger drinking water is mixed water from the state water supply and the Strohgäu water supply. The waste is taken from the Abfallverwertungsgesellschaft the district Ludwigsburg mbH (AVL), a 100% subsidiary of the district Ludwigsburg. AVL is commissioned to carry out the tasks of avoiding, recycling and disposing of waste on behalf of the Ludwigsburg district.
