Serge David Gnabry [ sɛʁʒ ɲabʁi ] (born July 14, 1995 in Stuttgart ) is a German football player . He moved to England as a teenager and has played in the Bundesliga since 2016 . In 2016, the multiple junior national player won the silver medal with the Olympic selection at the Olympic Games in Brazil and made his first appearances for the German national team in the same year . Since July 2017 he has been under contract with FC Bayern Munich , with whom he won the triple of the German championship , DFB Cup and the UEFA Champions League in 2020 .

Life

Serge Gnabry was born the son of an Ivorian and a Swabian woman in the Baden-Württemberg state capital Stuttgart and grew up 30 kilometers northwest in Weissach . The fact that his father Jean-Hermann Gnabry was a former Ivorian national player was reported in the media for years without warning. It was only in September 2016 that Serge Gnabry said in an interview that this was not the case. His father was not even active as a professional football player.

Club career

Gnabry started playing football at club level at TSV Weissach. He came to VfB Stuttgart at the age of ten through TSF Ditzingen , GSV Hemmingen, Sportvg Feuerbach and Stuttgarter Kickers , for whom he played for their B-Juniors in the B-Juniors Bundesliga in the 2010/11 season .

Arsenal FC

Arsenal FC signed him from London for the 2011/12 season . The training compensation paid to VfB Stuttgart was 100,000 euros . In London, Gnabry, who was used in the right attacking midfield, was initially used in the youth team (U18). He played eight games with four goals in the season. These were divided between the U18 team, the Youth Cup , the NextGen Series and the reserve (U21). He ran for the reserve from the beginning of 2012. His former employer, however, contradicts the assignment of the season's assignments to the various teams on the club's own website.

At Arsenal, Gnabry signed his first professional contract on July 31, 2012. He made his debut on the 8th match day of the 2012/13 season in the Premier League when he came on in the match at Norwich City in the 82nd minute for Aaron Ramsey . In the 2012/13 season he was also a member of the London Champions League squad and made his debut in the premier class three days after his first Premier League game as a substitute in the 2-0 defeat by FC Schalke 04 . He then fell out for several months because of a pinched nerve in his back. He did not play any other league or European cup games in the professional team that season. However, he was used in two games of the League Cup . In addition to games in the Youth Cup, the U18 League and the NextGen Series, his club also showed him 16 appearances in the U21 in 2012/13, in which he scored four goals.

In the 2013/14 season Gnabry came on September 22, 2013 against Stoke City for his second appearance in the Premier League and ran for the first time in the starting XI. On September 28, 2013, he scored his first goal in the Premier League in a 2-1 win over Swansea City . This makes Gnabry, who was 18 years and 76 days old at the time, after Cesc Fàbregas, the second youngest goalscorer in the history of the London Premier League. At the end of October 2013, he extended his contract with Arsenal until 2018. Gnabry played nine games in the 2013/14 season up to his last appearance on February 22, 2014 and scored one goal for the first division team. He was also used in two Champions League matches that season . He played two games for Arsenal's U21 team in 2013/14 and scored two goals. He was also used three times in the UEFA Youth League and scored four times in the opponent's goal. In the 2014/15 season he was not used in the Premier League. His club qualified for the Champions League and won the FA Cup in 2014/15 . In the club's U21s, he played eight league games that season and scored three goals.

West Brom and return to Arsenal

For the 2015/16 season Gnabry moved on loan to league rivals West Bromwich Albion , but only made a brief appearance in the league and two appearances in the League Cup .

The loan ended at the end of January 2016 and Gnabry returned to Arsenal. By the end of the season he was used there in five league games of the U21 team and scored two goals.

Werder Bremen

For the 2016/17 season Gnabry was signed by the German Bundesliga club Werder Bremen . He made his debut on September 11, 2016 (2nd matchday) in the 1: 2 defeat against FC Augsburg . The following week he scored his first goal for Werder Bremen in the 1: 4 away defeat at Borussia Mönchengladbach . The goal was named goal of the month . In the first half of the season Gnabry became a top performer at Werder, scored seven goals and was considered to be one of the hopes during the difficult phase in which the club fell to the relegation place. In March 2017, the offensive all-rounder was out for about a month due to knee and muscle problems. As the Werder team stabilized in Gnabry's absence, Gnabry lost his regular place and was only in the starting line-up until the end of the season. Nevertheless, he finished the 2016/17 season with eleven goals in 27 appearances as Bremen's second-best goalscorer in the Bundesliga behind Max Kruse . In early June 2017, he used a release clause in his contract to leave the club at the end of the month.

TSG 1899 Hoffenheim

For the 2017/18 season Gnabry was signed by FC Bayern Munich and given a contract that runs until June 30, 2020. Before the end of his vacation after winning the U21 European Championship , he was loaned out to TSG 1899 Hoffenheim , which had occupied fourth place in the table in the previous season - at his own request - until the end of the season. There he came on for the first time on August 19, 2017 (1st matchday) in a 1-0 win against his ex-club Werder Bremen, when he came on for Mark Uth in the 67th minute . He then fell out because of a capsule injury . During his comeback in the game against FC Schalke 04 on September 23, 2017, he injured his thigh and was out for about a month and a half. During the international break, Gnabry played in the Regionalliga Südwest for the second team of Hoffenheim against VfB Stuttgart II (3: 1). He scored his first two goals on December 2, 2017 (14th matchday) in a 4-0 home win against RB Leipzig . His goal to make it 3-0 from 45 meters was then voted goal of the month .

With the beginning of the second half of the season Gnabry finally established himself as a regular player in the Hoffenheim 3-5-2 system, where he was used either as a hanging tip or as a winger . He contributed eight goals in the second half of the season and was one of the guarantors for TSG's upswing in the second half of the season, which ended with third place and the first qualification for the Champions League after Hoffenheim was in seventh place in the table during the winter break and was eliminated early in the cup competitions.

FC Bayern Munich

On September 1, 2018 (2nd matchday) he made his debut in the Bundesliga match with VfB Stuttgart, which he won 3-0, after replacing Franck Ribéry in the 77th minute. He scored his first competitive goal for Munich in a 1-1 draw against SC Freiburg on November 3, 2018 (10th matchday). In his first season with Munich, he won the double consisting of the German championship and the DFB-Pokal and was voted player of the 2018/19 season by the fans of FC Bayern. On October 1, 2019, in his 50th competitive game for Bayern, Gnabry scored four times in a 7-2 away win over Tottenham Hotspur in the second half, scoring his first goals in the UEFA Champions League . In 2020 he won the triple of championship, cup and Champions League. He contributed to winning the Champions League with a total of nine goals, making him the second top scorer in his team.

In March 2019, his contract with FC Bayern was prematurely extended until 2023.
