Olympic Games :
Participation in the finals 4 ( first : 1928 )
Best results Fourth ( 1996 )
(As of August 21, 2016 )

The Portuguese national football team first took part in the 1928 Olympic Games in Amsterdam , but were eliminated there in the quarterfinals. The Portuguese NOK had already reported a team to the football tournament four years earlier, but it was then withdrawn. After that, Portugal only took part in the qualification again when the amateur conditions were relaxed for the 1984 games and then could not qualify again until 1996 when the qualification ran over the U-21 European Championships and achieved the best result so far with fourth place. Then they qualified twice, most recently for the 2016 games in Rio de Janeiro as U-21 vice European champion . There the players - with the exception of four older players - were allowed to be 23 years old.
