World Cup tournaments

1930 in Uruguay

Like most European teams, the Portuguese did not take part in the first World Cup.

1934 in Italy

For the first World Cup in Europe is Portugal had to go through two games against the neighbor Spain qualify and lost both games (0: 9 and 1: 2).

1938 in France

For the first World Cup in France to Portugal had against Switzerland qualify . Both agreed on a game on a neutral pitch, which Switzerland won 2-1 in Milan .

1950 in Brazil

For the first World Cup in Brazil , Portugal had to play against Spain again in qualifying and lost 5-1 in Madrid . In the second leg in Lisbon only a 2: 2 was achieved with which Portugal was eliminated. When the qualified Turkish team gave up their right to start, the free place was offered to the Portuguese, but they refused to participate.

1954 in Switzerland

In qualifying for the World Cup in Switzerland, Portugal met Austria and lost their first game in Vienna 1: 9. After a goalless draw in Lisbon, Portugal were eliminated.

1958 in Sweden

For the Football World Cup 1958 Portugal could not qualify again and Northern Ireland had to give way. After all, the first qualifying game was won against Italy , but in the end Italy, which only missed participation at this World Cup, was placed ahead of Portugal.

1962 in Chile

For the soccer world championship in 1962 Portugal could not qualify again. This time England was too strong and even Luxembourg lost. With Benfica Lisbon in 1961 a Portuguese team won the European Cup for the first time and confirmed their success in 1962, so there were justified hopes for qualification.

1966 in England

Eusébio - World Cup top scorer in 1966

For the World Cup in England , Portugal had to qualify in a group with runner-up world champions Czechoslovakia , Romania and Turkey . This succeeded with ease. Only the last game in Romania was lost when the qualification was already established.

In England, Portugal became a surprise team. She won her first World Cup game against Hungary 3-1, with José Augusto already making it 1-0 in the first minute and after the 1-1 draw in the meantime, he brought the Portuguese back into the lead. Against Bulgaria they won 3-0 in the next game, with the later top scorer Eusébio scoring his first of nine World Cup goals with the 2-0 goal. Then the team faced defending champions Brazil and in a tough game in which Pele was brutally fouled several times by João Morais , which left him only partially in the game, Portugal prevailed 3-1 and reached the quarter-finals. Here was North Korea , the second surprise team of the tournament, the opponents who had surprisingly eliminated Italy . The North Koreans, who had only scored two goals in three group games, took the lead 1-0 in the first minute and increased to 3-0 by the 24th minute. But three minutes later Eusébio reduced the score to 1: 3 and two minutes before the break with a penalty to 2: 3. After the break he scored two more goals, one of them again from a penalty and the 5: 3 scored by José Augusto, Portugal qualified for the semi-finals. Here the Portuguese met hosts England and lost 2-1. In the small final against the USSR , third place was achieved with a 2-1 victory and Eusébio was the top scorer. With that, Portugal said goodbye to the World Cup for 20 years.

1970 in Mexico

Four years later, Portugal failed to qualify again. In a group with Romania , Greece and Switzerland , only the last place was taken. The qualification started well with a 3-0 win against Romania, but then they lost in Greece and at home to Switzerland and only got two points against Greece and Switzerland.

1974 in the Federal Republic of Germany

The qualification for the first World Cup in Germany went better, at least the second place was achieved in a group with Bulgaria , Northern Ireland and Cyprus , but this did not reach the qualification. The decisive factor was that Portugal only played a draw in their home games against the Bulgarians and Northern Irish, while the Bulgarians won all home games and thus qualified. In Germany, however, Bulgaria could not play a major role.

1978 in Argentina

The qualification for the World Cup in Argentina only finished second in the group and had to give way to Poland , the third place in the 1974 World Cup, against whom Portugal lost their first home game 2-0. Although all games were then won against the other group opponents Denmark and Cyprus, only a 1-1 draw was achieved in Poland.

1982 in Spain

Although the increase in the field of participants to 24 teams for the World Cup in Spain , which allowed 13 European teams to qualify, the qualification was apparently easier, but Portugal only reached fourth place in its group. Scotland and Northern Ireland qualified and Sweden was also ahead of Portugal. Only Israel was weaker. The qualification had started well with a 0-0 win in Scotland and victories against Northern Ireland and Israel . But after that all games were lost. Only the last game against Scotland, when everything was decided, was won. So Portugal missed the World Cup in the neighboring country.

1986 in Mexico

20 years after the first World Cup participation, Portugal was able to qualify again. Together with the German team , the Portugal taught the first World Cup qualifying defeat, managed a second group the qualifications . Sweden and Czechoslovakia were just left behind, Malta was only a point supplier, but was able to take a point from the Czechoslovaks, which they then lacked in the end.

In Mexico, Portugal won the opening game against ex-world champions England 1-0, but then lost to Poland 0-1. In the last game against Morocco , which had previously played 0-0 twice, a draw would have been enough for the Portuguese to reach the round of 16, but surprisingly they lost 3-1. For Morocco this was the first ever victory at a World Cup. Portugal, bottom of the group, said goodbye to the World Cup for 16 years.

1990 in Italy

For the second World Cup in Italy , Portugal had to qualify in a group with Belgium , the ČSSR , Switzerland and Luxembourg , but only reached third place, two points behind Belgium and the ČSSR.

1994 in the United States

The qualification for the World Cup in the United States had Portugal against Italy , Switzerland, Scotland , Malta and Estonia dispute and had until the final day good chance. The last game in Italy was lost 0-1, so that Portugal missed participation in third despite the fewest goals conceded.

1998 in France

To qualify for the second World Cup in France, Portugal was drawn into a group with European champions Germany , Ukraine , Armenia , Northern Ireland and Albania . Qualification started badly for the Portuguese: with a 0-0 victory in Armenia and a 2-1 defeat in Ukraine. After that, no more games were lost, but in the end one point was missing to reach the relegation games of the group runners-up.

2002 in Japan and South Korea

To qualify for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea, the Portuguese, who had reached the semi-finals of the European Championship two years earlier, competed in a group against Ireland , the Netherlands , Estonia , Cyprus and Andorra and qualified as first in the group, level on points with Ireland, which could also qualify in the intercontinental playoffs against Iran.

In South Korea, the team was drawn into a relatively easy group with co-hosts South Korea , which had never made it through the group stage before, the USA and Poland, and were considered group favorites. But already the first game against the USA was lost 3-2. After that Poland was defeated 4-0, but the last group game against the co-hosts was lost 0-1, with two Portuguese being sent off.

2006 in Germany

Portugal also qualified for the 2006 World Cup in Germany . In a group of seven with Slovakia , Russia , Estonia, Latvia , Liechtenstein and Luxembourg , Portugal prevailed with a seven point lead. No game was lost and especially impressed in the 7-1 win against Russia. Only the 2: 2 in Liechtenstein was a bit out of the ordinary.

In Germany, Portugal met the former colony Angola in the opening game , which was able to qualify for the first time. With 1-0, however, the victory was very close. With a 2-0 win against Iran , the round of 16 was made perfect. In the subsequent game against Mexico , the group win was achieved with a 2-1. In the round of 16, the Portuguese met the Dutch , whom they had defeated in the semi-finals two years earlier at the European Championships in their own country . In one of the toughest games in World Cup history with twelve yellow cards and four yellow-red cards, Portugal won 1-0. In the quarter-finals against England , Portugal then benefited from England's weakness on penalties and reached the semi-finals for the second time. Here ex-world champion France was the opponent and won 1-0. In the small final, the team then met host Germany and had to surrender to Bastian Schweinsteiger's one-man show . The fourth place is the best position since the first participation 40 years earlier. After the World Cup, the record international player Luís Figo and record scorer Pauleta ended their national team career.

2010 in South Africa

Scene from the round of 16 against Spain

However , Portugal only managed to qualify for the 2010 World Cup in South Africa with two 1-0 victories in the play-offs of the runners-up against Bosnia and Herzegovina . Previously, in a group of six, only second place was occupied behind Denmark . Sweden , Hungary , Albania and Malta were relegated to their places. The only defeat was in the home game against Denmark, which was lost 3-2.

In South Africa, the team was drawn into a so-called death group with Brazil , the Ivory Coast and North Korea . In the first game against the Ivorians there was only a 0-0, against North Korea with the 7-0 the Portuguese achieved the highest World Cup victory. With another goalless draw against record world champions Brazil, Portugal moved into second place in the round of 16. In this, the team met European champions Spain and lost 1-0, so that the World Cup was over for Portugal.

Coach Carlos Queiroz was initially banned from the anti-doping agency for six months because of disability and insults from inspectors during doping controls in the training camp before the world championship. The Portuguese football association FPF drew conclusions from this and released the coach from his duties on September 9, 2010.

2014 in Brazil

Also for the qualifications needed for the second World Cup in Brazil Portugal go the way through the play-off matches of the runners. In the group stage, Russia was stronger and only Israel , Azerbaijan , Northern Ireland and Luxembourg weaker. The direct qualification was gambled away with a 1-1 draw in the penultimate game against Israel. In the playoff games Sweden was the opponent and Cristiano Ronaldo decided the games almost single-handedly. In the first leg in Lisbon he scored the only goal to win 1-0. In the second leg in Solna he scored three goals for a 3-2 win, which meant that Portugal qualified.

In Brazil, the team met eventual world champions Germany in their first game and lost 4-0. In the second game against the USA , the team was 2-1 down until stoppage time, but then managed to equalize. The final 2: 1 against Ghana was not enough, as the Portuguese had the worse goal difference compared to the Americans through their first major defeat. So Portugal retired as a third party. After all, Cristiano Ronaldo was able to score his 50th international goal in the game against Ghana . After Portugal lost their first game to Albania in the following European Championship qualification, Paulo Bento , who had already come under fire after losing in the preliminary round, resigned as national coach. His successor was the previous Greek national coach Fernando Santos .

2018 in Russia

In the qualifying , which began in September 2016, the Portuguese arrived as the current European champion to Switzerland , Hungary , the Faroe Islands , Latvia and Andorra . The Portuguese started with a 2-0 defeat against Switzerland, but then won all other games so that they were in second place before the last game. In this they met for the second leg on Switzerland, which had won all games up to then. With a 2-0 win they relegated the Swiss to second place and qualified directly for the World Cup finals. With 15 goals, Cristiano Ronaldo was the second top scorer in European qualifying.

In Russia, Portugal started 3-3 against neighboring Spain, with Ronaldo scoring all three goals for his side. Against Morocco, he scored the only goal of the game in the fourth minute. Against Iran, he then failed with a penalty on the opposing goalkeeper. With a 1-1 draw, the Portuguese reached the round of 16 in second place, where they lost 2-1 to Uruguay.

Games

The Portuguese have played 30 World Cup games so far. Of these, 14 won, 10 lost and 6 ended in a draw. A draw game had to be extended because a winner had to be determined. The game was then won on penalties.

The Portuguese never played in the opening game and had to face the hosts three times, always losing: in 1966 in the semi-finals, in 2002 in the preliminary round and in 2006 in the game for third place.

The Portuguese lost three times (1966, 2010 and 2014) to the eventual world champions.

In 1966 in the preliminary round, the Portuguese won against the defending champion.

The Portuguese met newcomers to the World Cup twice: in 1966 (when they were newcomers themselves) / North Korea and 2006 / Angola.

Portugal met England most frequently in World Cup tournaments, a total of three times (1966, 1986 and 2006).
