Football World Cup 2002 / Portugal
This article covers the Portuguese national team at the 2002 World Cup .
qualification
With Portugal and the Netherlands, two teams that belonged to the other group of favorites were drawn into qualification group 2. The other teams were Ireland, Estonia, Cyprus and Andorra. Only the first in the group qualified directly. The second had to play two playoffs against the second in another group.
The opening match against Estonia was won as expected, but then an avoidable draw with Ireland followed at home. The foundation for group victory was laid in the next game when the Netherlands were beaten 2-0 away. It didn't really matter that the second leg ended in a draw. When a draw was also reached in the away game against Ireland, which had meanwhile risen to rival, the final round of the World Cup was practically reached. The remaining games were won high, so that thanks to the better goal difference, first place could be defended before the surprise second Ireland.

Portuguese team matches
Portugal were considered the big favorites in Group D. They had previously done well at the European Championship, left the Netherlands behind in qualifying and with Luís Figo a world-class player in the squad.
The euphoria had already evaporated in the first game when they were 3-0 behind against the USA in the early stages. Serious defensive errors were the cause of this unimaginable interim result. Portugal was able to improve the result to 2: 3, but could no longer avoid the defeat.
In the second game Poland was defeated 4-0. Everything was open again. In the last game against hosts South Korea, a draw would be enough. But after just 27 minutes Portugal lost a player by sending them off. Another red card followed in the middle of the second half. Portugal only had nine players left. The Koreans, who played concentrated, had little trouble. Shortly after the second expulsion, the decisive 1-0 was shot. Thus Portugal was eliminated as third in the group.
