Hugo Miguel Ferreira Gomes Viana [ ˈuɣu viˈɐnɐ ] (born January 15, 1983 in Barcelos ), called Hugo Viana , is a former Portuguese football player .

Career

Hugo Viana started his football career at Sporting Lisbon and moved to Newcastle United in the English Premier League in 2002 for 12.5 million euros . There he completed two seasons and took part with Newcastle in the 2002/03 Champions League . The team reached the second round, but failed in Group A at FC Barcelona and Inter Milan . After the second season in England, in which he again failed to fight for a regular place at Newcastle, Viana was awarded again to Sporting Lisbon. At the beginning of the 2005/2006 season he moved to the Spanish Primera División for Valencia CF, also only on loan, as Sporting was not ready to pay the high transfer fee to Newcastle. In Valencia he was usually only used by coach Quique Flores after the break or during the second half. He played 19 games for Valencia CF in the 2005/06 season and reached third place with his team behind champions FC Barcelona and Real Madrid . In March 2006, Viana was bought by Valencia CF for around 2.3 million euros. In July 2007 he was loaned from CA Osasuna , where he did not play a game for the full season and so only came to 9 part-time appearances, which was also due to the fact that he sustained a protracted injury during the preparation for the season. In the 2008/09 season he played again for Valencia, he only made four competitive appearances for Valencia in the entire season. In the 2009/10 season he was loaned to Sporting Braga . Subsequently, his contract with Valencia CF was terminated by mutual agreement so that Hugo Viana could move to Sporting Braga on a free transfer. Hugo Viana signed a three-year contract with the Portuguese runners-up. In July 2013 Viana moved to Al-Ahli Dubai in the United Arab Emirates .

National team

Viana played his first international match in a friendly against Angola on November 14, 2001 , which ended in a 5-1 win for Portugal. Before that, he had established himself in the Portuguese U-21 team, with which he participated in the U21 European Championships in 2002 and 2004.

Hugo Viana was in the squad of the Portuguese national team at the 2002 World Cup , but was not used. He took part with Portugal in the 2004 Olympic Games in Athens and played at the 2006 World Cup in Germany.
