Marco Caneira [ kɐˈnɐiɾɐ ] (born February 9, 1979 in Negrais, Sintra ; actually Marco António Simões Caneira ) is a former Portuguese football player .

Career

In the early stages of his career he was often loaned out to other clubs to gain match practice. So he switched to SC Salgueiros , SC Beira Mar and FC Alverca , where he was able to gain his first experience.

Caneira made his debut in the Portuguese national team and was also nominated by António Oliveira in the squad for the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea. During the tournament, however, he was not used, Portugal was eliminated in the group stage.

After the World Cup, Caneira moved to France to Girondins Bordeaux for a transfer fee of € 1,500,000 , where he was an integral part of the team in the first season, which was fourth at the end of the season. In the following season, Caneira consolidated his place in the first eleven and was used in almost every competitive game.

Caneira was not the European Football Championship in 2004 nominated in their own country, but aroused the interest of the then Spanish champions and UEFA Cup -Siegers FC Valencia . For a fee of € 2,000,000, Valencia secured the services of the full-back. In October 2004 he made his debut in the Champions League , which ended with a disappointing 5-1 in front of his own audience against the Italian top club Inter Milan . During his time in Valencia, however, he also achieved positive things, including his first goal in a league game against Real Zaragoza .

After he was not used as often as before in the first half of the 2004/2005 season, Caneira returned to Sporting Lisbon on loan. There he was able to recommend himself for the 2006 World Cup , for which he was nominated by Luiz Felipe Scolari . In the last group game against Mexico , he played for the entire 90 minutes.

For the 2007/2008 season Caneira returned to Valenca as his loan deal expired. He was used regularly, not just in the club. In the national team, Caneira got more time than ever before and had his part in Portugal qualifying for the European Football Championship in 2008 , for which he was not considered.

In 2008 he ended his chapter in Spain for the time being and returned to Sporting Lisbon, for which he was now under contract for the third time.

From 2011 to 2015 Caneira played in the first Hungarian division for Videoton FC .
