The Portugal U-21 national soccer team is a selection team of Portuguese soccer players . She belongs to the Federação Portuguesa de Futebol and represents them at the U-21 level , in friendly matches against the national teams of other national associations, but also at the European Championship of the continental association UEFA . Eligible to play are players who have not yet reached the age of 21 and who are Portuguese citizens . In tournaments, the age at the first qualifying game is decisive.
history
Portugal played their first U-21 international against Spain on April 21, 1971 . In the goalless game, the later A-team players Manuel Bento and Toni played . The team's first official game ended with a 2-1 victory over Luxembourg in qualifying for the first U-21 European Championship in 1978 .
Up to and including 1992, Portugal's U-21 selection could not qualify for any European championship. The first participation was not possible until the Euro 1994 . In the quarterfinals, the team had to play against Poland and could clearly win in two games with an overall result of 5-1. In the semi-finals, the southern Europeans then met their neighbor Spain , with the Portuguese prevailing 2-0. On April 20, 1994 in Montpellier , the team then faced the defending champion Italy . After 90 minutes it was 0-0. It was only in extra time that the Italians won 1-0.
In 1996, at the European Championships in Spain , the Portuguese qualified for the second time in a row. In the quarter-finals, the team had to face the final opponent from Italy. The team won the first leg 1-0, but lost the second leg 2-0, so that the dream of a renewed participation in the final broke early on.
The Portuguese missed the two tournaments in 1998 and 2000 and already failed in their qualifying rounds.
The Iberians only qualified again for the 2002 European Championship . Together with Italy, the hosts Switzerland and England , the team was drawn into Group A. In the opening game against Italy, the team achieved a 1-1 draw against long-term rivals Italy. Due to a 2-0 defeat against Switzerland on the second matchday, they were forced to hope for Italian help before the final matchday against England. They played in their third game against Switzerland. Although Portugal won 3-1, this result was not enough. The Swiss parted from Italy 0-0 and only qualified for the quarter-finals because of the better goal difference.
In 2006 the Portuguese were already qualified as hosts. In group A, Germany , Serbia and Montenegro and France were drawn. After just one 1-0 win against Germany from three games, the southern Europeans were already over after the preliminary round.
One year later, in 2007 , and not every two years as usual, the next European Championship took place. With four points and a goal difference of 5: 2, the quarter-finals were missed and only reached third place in the preliminary round.
