Rúben Afonso Borges Semedo (born April 4, 1994 in Amadora ) is a Portuguese football player who plays for Olympiacos . He can play as a center- back or a defensive midfielder .

Career

Semedo was born in Amadora in the Lisbon metropolitan area and is of Cape Verdean descent. He entered the Sporting Lisbon youth system at the age of 16 . On August 26, 2014, he and his teammate Vítor were loaned to the Spanish second division club CF Reus Deportiu . For the 2015/16 season, Semedo was first promoted to the professional team of Sporting and then loaned to Vitória Setúbal for a year .

On February 18, 2016, Semedo played his first game in a European competition. He was thrown off the field after two yellow cards in a 1-0 home defeat by Bayer Leverkusen in the last 32 of the UEFA Europa League . On March 9th, he signed a new contract until 2022, with a release clause of 45 million euros .

For the 2017/18 season , Semedo moved to Villarreal . He made his league debut on August 25th and played the entire time in a 3-0 away loss to Real Sociedad . However, he was unable to establish himself in the first team and was suspended after his arrest. At the beginning of the 2018/19 season he was loaned to the SD Huesca .

On January 29, 2019, Semedo returned to Portugal and signed on loan with Rio Ave FC at the end of the season .

At the beginning of the 2019/20 season, Semedo moved to Olympiacos in Greece and signed a five-year contract.

Legal problems

In January 2018, it was announced that Semedo would be tried in November last year over a dispute in a bar in Valencia when the player allegedly threatened people with a gun . He was arrested again on February 20 for a separate incident, this time alleged to have abducted, handcuffed, beaten and robbed a man along with two accomplices. For the latter incident, he was charged with attempted manslaughter and taken into custody.

On July 13, 2018, Semedo was released from prison after paying bail of € 30,000.
