Mathieu Valbuena (born September 28, 1984 in Bruges ) is a French football player . The midfielder is under contract with Olympiacos . His teammates gave him the nickname p'tit vélo (literally in allusion to his height, “small bicycle”; colloquially, avoir un petit vélo also means “to have a tit”).

Career

societies

Valbuena began his career at the amateur club ES Blanquefort and then in the youth department of Girondins Bordeaux , but was banned there at the age of 17 from the U-18 team because, in the opinion of his coach, he played too stubbornly.

He then played for the small club Langon-Castets for two years from 2002 and worked as a salesman in a sports shop. For the 2004/05 season he moved to FC Libourne-Saint-Seurin , who was then playing in the third division . In the 2005/06 season he rose to Ligue 2 with Libourne-Saint-Seurin and was voted the best player in the league. In the summer of 2006 he then moved to Olympique Marseille . Valbuena was Eric Gerets' dream player . Gerets about his commitment: “ He was by far the best player in the third division. An explosive powerhouse that could free itself from two or three opponents in a flash because it was so agile. “In his first year in professional football, he was runner-up with Marseille; in the team that played the final of the French Cup , however, he was not used. He missed most of the game due to an injury. He still has a share in the runner-up and the associated qualification for the Champions League when he scored his first goal for Olympique Marseille on the penultimate match day and thus the winning goal in the game against AS Saint-Étienne . After Franck Ribéry moved to Bayern Munich for the new season , Valbuena took over his place. At the side of Samir Nasri he blossomed and became a crowd favorite. In the 2007/08 season he made 29 league appearances and scored three goals. He also played six times in the Champions League; in the 1-0 win against last year's finalists Liverpool FC , he marked the goal of the day. He also played four times in the UEFA Cup . In the 2008/09 season Valbuena was also runner-up with Olympique Marseille.

The 2009/10 season got off to a very bad start for him: In the first half of the season he was mostly only a substitute or even sat in the stands. It was not until the beginning of 2010 that coach Didier Deschamps made Valbuena a regular again; OM became champion and league cup winner at the end of the season and had won titles again after almost two decades.

In July 2014 he moved to FK Dynamo Moscow . For the Russian club Valbuena completed 29 league games in which he scored six goals. In August 2015 Valbuena returned to France and signed a contract with Olympique Lyon . From 2017 to 2019 he played for Fenerbahçe Istanbul in the Süper Lig .

National team

Valbuenas proportion of Marseilles success in the 2009/10 season was also reflected in its surprising nomination for the preliminary squad of the senior national team of France to the World Cup finals in 2010 by Raymond Domenech , who was then coached the national team down. In the preparation game against Costa Rica at the end of May 2010, he was substituted on in the second half and scored France's winning goal after just a few minutes. Mathieu Valbuena was also part of the final squad . Under Domenech's successor Laurent Blanc and especially since Didier Deschamps has led the national team (2012), Valbuena has developed into the undisputed creative mind in the French midfield. In his 52 international matches, he scored eight goals. (As of October 11, 2015)
