Eric Maria Gerets (born May 18, 1954 in Rekem ) is a former Belgian football player and coach .
Career as a player
Gerets began his career at AA Rekem. In 1971 he moved to Standard Liège . With Standard Liège he was cup winner in 1981 and champion in 1982 and 1983. In 1982 he was voted Belgium's Footballer of the Year . In 1983 Gerets moved to Italy for AC Milan . However, he couldn't find his way around here and switched to MVV Maastricht in 1984 . For the 1985/86 season he moved to PSV Eindhoven , where he was under contract until the end of his career in 1992. The PSV Eindhoven he won in 1988 on May 25 in Stuttgart against Benfica on penalties (0.. 0 n V./6:5 after Elfm) the European Champions Cup , was six times champion and three times cup winners.
The right-back made his debut on September 27, 1975 at the international match in Brussels against the DFV selection in the national team . Along with players like Jean-Marie Pfaff , Walter Meeuws and Jan Ceulemans, Gerets was one of the pillars of the team headed by national coach Guy Thys , who played their way into the elite of world football at the 1980 European Championship in Italy. In the European Championship qualifying group 2, the "Red Devils" had to deal with competitors from Austria, Portugal, Scotland and Norway from September 20, 1978 to December 19, 1979. Belgium prevailed with 12: 5 goals and 12: 4 points, Gerets played all eight qualifying games - as did Julien Cools , Francois van der Elst , Walter Meeuws and René Vandereycken . In the 1980 European Championship finals in Italy from June 11 to 22, Gerets was also on the field in the three group matches against England (1: 1), Spain (2: 1 and Italy (0: 0). At the Soccer World Cup in 1990 he reached the second round with the team, but lost to England after Verlän excitement. With the game on March 27, 1991 in Brussels against Wales, he ended his 16-year career in the national team.
Career as a coach
Immediately after his active career, Eric Gerets took over as head coach of the Belgian first division club RFC Liège in 1992 . In the following years, his coaching activities led him to the clubs Lierse SK and FC Brugge , with which he became Belgian champions. From 1999 to 2002 Gerets worked for PSV Eindhoven, with whom he twice became Dutch champion and Dutch Supercup winner in 2001. In May 2002 he was released in Eindhoven and on September 5, 2002 he replaced Andreas Brehme as coach at the German Bundesliga club 1. FC Kaiserslautern , where he saved the team from relegation and led the team to the 2003 DFB Cup final, where the team took off FC Bayern Munich lost. After a mixed first half series in 2003/04, Gerets was released on February 2, 2004 in Kaiserslautern and signed a contract with VfL Wolfsburg on April 4, 2004 . At the beginning of the 2004/05 season he led Wolfsburg to the top of the table in the Bundesliga, but the club was unable to maintain this level until the end of the season. After differences with the board about the future of the association, they separated on May 28, 2005 and Eric Gerets was replaced by Holger Fach . Gerets then signed a contract with the traditional Turkish club Galatasaray Istanbul , where he was in office from May 2005 to May 2007. With this club he won the championship in the 2005/06 season. Since September 2007, he has been the successor to Albert Emon as coach of the French first division Olympique Marseille . On April 28, 2009 Gerets announced his retirement as coach of Olympique Marseille at the end of the season. On July 1, 2009, Erik Gerets took over the al-Hilal association from Saudi Arabia , which he coached until autumn 2010. In July 2010 he signed a contract to coach the Moroccan national team , which he coached for the first time in November 2010. His contract with the Moroccan national team ended in September 2012 and Gerets took over Lekhwiya from the Qatar Stars League in October 2012 . After a year and a half, the collaboration ended after Lekhwiya had won the QSL championship in Geret's second season. From May 2014 to June 2015 he was the coach of the al-Jazira Club .
