François Vercauteren (born October 28, 1956 in Molenbeek-Saint-Jean ), mostly referred to as Franky Vercauteren , sometimes also Frank Vercauteren , nickname: "The Prince", is a former Belgian football player in the position of a left-attacking midfielder who now works as a football coach .

Player career

He made his debut for the Anderlecht first team in 1975 against KRC Mechelen . A double injury in October 1975 and January 1976 slowed his development. Vercauteren won five European titles with Anderlecht (twice the European Cup Winners' Cup , once the UEFA Cup , twice the European Supercup ). He also won the Belgian Cup twice , four championship titles and the Belgian Supercup twice . In 1987 he moved to FC Nantes in France and came back to Belgium three years later to play for RWD Molenbeek until 1993 . During his time at Nantes Vercauteren finished the championship twice as the player with the most assists.

National team

Vercauteren played 63 times for the Belgian national team . He was involved in the team that finished fourth at the 1986 World Cup and also played at the 1982 World Cup and the 1984 European Championship . Although he made his debut on November 16, 1977 (Belgium lost 3-0 to Northern Ireland ), he was not selected for the 1980 European Championship , in which Belgium reached the final.

Coaching career

At the end of his playing career, he became the coach of the youth team of CS Braine , a small club in Walloon Brabant . A year later he moved to KV Mechelen , where he first coached the youth team and then the first team (1997-1998). At the end of the season he signed as an assistant coach at his first club, RSC Anderlecht. After a disappointing start to the season 1998/99 he was appointed coach together with his friend Jean Dockx .

In the 2006/07 season he was able to celebrate his second Belgian national championship title with the RSCA after the 2005/06 season. During these two years, he was in charge of the young Belgian national player Vincent Kompany and Christian Wilhelmsson (Swedish national player), Ahmed Hassan (Egyptian national player) and many Argentinian talents such as Nicolás Frutos , Nicolás Pareja and Lucas Biglia (won with the Argentinian U -20 national team as captain world champion).

On November 12, 2007 he was dismissed from RSC Anderlecht after he finished fourth in the league with seven points behind the leaders. After a short flying visit to the Belgian men's national team in 2009, he was dismissed that same year and took over the KRC Genk . From 2011 he coached the Al-Jazira Club . On October 30, 2012, he became the coach of Sporting Lisbon , but was dismissed there on January 7, 2013 because his success fell short of expectations.

After a year without a club, he was hired by KV Mechelen, then playing in the First Division , as a coach with a contract until the end of the season in early January 2014 . He kept the club at a distance from the relegation places during his tenure, but then did not reach the first place in the play-offs, which would have meant a possible qualification for the European Cup. The club then decided that his contract would not be renewed.

Vercauteren then moved to the Russian club Krylja Sowetow Samara as a coach . Samara was relegated to the Pervenstvo FNL , the second highest Russian league, this season. Under Vercauteren, the club succeeded in being promoted to the Premjer league for the 2015/16 season . After this season was completed in midfield of the league, his contract was extended. The next season, Samara was in last place at the end of October 2016 after a 9-1 defeat. Vercauteren was then dismissed as a coach.

Again Vercauteren was without an arrangement for a year. On October 16, 2017, he again signed a contract with Cercle Bruges in Belgium . Under him as coach, the club won the second tranche of Division 1B and the promotion games. Despite promotion to the first division, Vercauteren and the club decided to separate by mutual agreement.

His path then led back abroad. He signed a one-year contract with an extension option for another year with the Saudi Arabian association Al-Batin. After the club had only achieved four out of 21 possible points at the end of October 2018, it was dismissed from the club.

In February 2019 Vincent Euvrard took over the job of coach of Oud-Heverlee Löwen , a club in Division 1B. At the same time, Vercauteren von Löwen was hired as a consultant.

On October 3, 2019, he moved to RSC Anderlecht , where he was hired as the successor to Simon Davies as the new head coach. On August 17, 2020, Vincent Kompany took over as a coach himself after his playing career ended, and Vercauteren was fired.
