Robert Waseige (born August 26, 1939 in Rocourt , † July 17, 2019 in Liège ) was a Belgian football manager and professional footballer . He coached the Belgian national team during the 2000 European Football Championship and led Belgium to the second round of the 2002 World Cup , where he was awarded the FIFA Fair Play Prize .

life and work

Robert Waseige began his playing career at RFC Liège , where he played over 100 games in four years. In 1962 he moved to Racing White Brussels for eight seasons. In 1971 he became a coach at KFC Winterslag and then at Standard Liège , where he was very successful.

Waseige was coach of the Belgian national team before the EM 2000 . At this tournament Belgium, together with the Netherlands hosts, were eliminated in the preliminary round. In 2002 he led the Belgian selection to the second round at the World Cup in Japan and South Korea.

He later became the national coach in Algeria. For some time he worked as a consultant for Be-TV, a Belgian private TV broadcaster.
