In the first duel with future long-term rivals Sport Lisboa , a predecessor club of Benfica , a 2-1 victory was achieved. In the 1907/1908 season the club was regional runner-up. In 1910, the year José Alvalade became club president, Sporting won the championship title in tennis , pole vault , shot put and long jump .

After a 1928 win against rivals Benfica, in which the players swapped shirts for the new striped shirts at halftime, the latter became the club's official shirts for good. Green and white split jerseys, which were used from 1908, are still used as gala or away jerseys.
1940-1960
With the green and white striped jerseys, the SCP won 18 football championship titles and four cup victories in the 1940s and 1950s.
Sporting's José Travassos was the first Portuguese player to be nominated for a European selection in 1955 and played against Great Britain's selection in Belfast .

From 1960
In 1964, the club achieved its greatest success in football by winning the European Cup Winners' Cup against the Hungarian football club MTK Budapest . After a 3: 3 in the Heysel Stadium in Brussels , a replay had to be scheduled. The SCP won this in the Bosuil Stadium in Antwerp with a corner kick directly converted by João Morais after 20 minutes 1-0. On the way to the final, SCP scored 16: 1 against APOEL Nicosia from Cyprus, the highest win to date in a European Cup game and won 5: 0 after a 1: 4 first leg defeat against Manchester United at home. In the semifinals, after results of 1: 1 and 0: 0 against Olympique Lyon, a playoff was necessary, which ended in the Stadium Metropolitano de Madrid with 1: 0 for Sporting.
In 1971, the club signed the Argentine soccer player Héctor Yazalde from the Bonaren suburban club CA Independiente . In the 1973/74 season, Yazalde scored 46 goals in 30 games and still holds the European record for most goals in one season.
