The Stadium Metropolitano de Madrid (mostly just Estadio Metropolitano ) was a multi-purpose stadium in the Spanish city of Madrid . From 1923 to 1966 it served as the home of the Atlético Madrid football club , but at times also housed other clubs from the capital. In addition, athletics competitions and greyhound races were held in the Metropolitano stadium.

history

The project to build the Metropolitano Stadium was developed by Compañia Metropolitano , which also implemented the Madrid Metro . The aim was to build a large and modern stadium for the Spanish capital, Madrid. The venue was designed by former Real Madrid soccer player José María Castell . The arena was built in the west of the city and was officially opened on May 13, 1923 with a game between Athletic Club Madrid and Real Sociedad . The stadium, which also had a running track , had a capacity of around 25,000 spectators at the time, most of them on the main stand on the south side. The 16 meter high natural grandstand on the east side of the arena was particularly characteristic. The sports facility was owned by the brothers José María and Miguel Otamendi , the Sociedad Stadium . In addition to Atlético Madrid, other football clubs in the Spanish capital, such as Real Sociedad Gimnástica Española and Racing Club Madrid , played their home games here. A historic match of the Spanish national team took place on May 15, 1929 in the stadium, the Iberians prevailed against England 4-3 and inflicted their first defeat in history against a team from outside the British Isles. In addition to football, the stadium also hosted athletics competitions and, from 1930, greyhound races .

The stadium was badly damaged in the course of the civil war, and in particular the Battle of Madrid , which raged in the nearby university complex. The renovation work lasted until February 21, 1943, when the Estadio Metropolitano was able to reopen with a Derbi madrileño between the home team and Real Madrid . In the same year, the venue was also the scene of the final of the Spanish Cup . On April 15, 1950, the stadium became the property of Atlético Madrid and the club began to adapt it to their needs. In 1954, the club removed the running track, lowered the pitch, creating space for another tier of spectators. The stadium had a capacity of around 58,000 visitors. In 1961, Atlético Madrid, on the banks of the Manzanares , in the south of the city, acquired the grounds for the construction of a new stadium, which began that same year. The Metropolitano stadium was demolished after the 1965/66 season, and the club moved to the completed Estadio del Manzanares , now known as the Estadio Vicente Calderón .
