Alejandro Scopelli Casanova (born May 12, 1908 in La Plata , Argentina , † October 23, 1987 in Mexico City , Mexico ) was an Argentine - Italian football player and coach .

He played for eight years for the Argentine national team , which he represented at the 1930 World Cup , and also a game for the Italian football team .

Player career

Scopelli began his career as a football player at Estudiantes de La Plata , where he was part of the legendary Los profesores team.

In 1933 Scopelli moved to Italy , where he played for AS Roma and Inter Milan in the following years . He was one of the first Argentine soccer players in Europe. During his time in Italy, he also played his only game for the Italian national football team .

In 1936 he returned to Argentina to compete for Racing Club Avellaneda . After he had then played at Red Star Paris in France , he was active at least in November 1940 for the Uruguayan first division club Bella Vista . Scopelli moved to neutral Portugal at the beginning of the Second World War , where he played in the capital Lisbon for Belenenses and Benfica .

In 1942 Scopelli returned to South America and joined the Chilean club CF Universidad de Chile , where he ended his career in 1943.

National team

Scopelli played for eight years, from 1929 to 1937, in the Argentine national team .

On February 17, 1935, he also completed a game for the Italian national team in the 2-1 win against France .

Coaching career

After finishing his playing career, Scopelli was coach. His most famous club stations include Club América in Mexico , Valencia , La Coruña and Espanyol Barcelona in Spain as well as Belenenses , Sporting Lisbon and FC Porto in Portugal .

Scopelli also coached the Chilean national football team .
