Nelson Acosta , full name Nelson Bonifacio Acosta López , (born June 12, 1944 or July 1, 1953 in Paso de los Toros , Uruguay ) is a former Uruguayan football player and current coach . He has also had Chilean citizenship since 1984.
Player career
society
Acosta, who was born in inland Uruguay in Paso de los Toros and grew up in Estación Francia as the son of the local station master with his parents and five siblings during the first 14 years of his life , first played for the Colón club in Paso de los Toros, where he played at the age of 14 also worked for the railway. He then moved to Montevideo and began his sporting career at club level in 1970, initially with the local club Huracán Buceo . From there, the Acosta , who had been a fan of arch-rival Nacional Montevideo as a fan since childhood, as well as almost the entire rest of the family, moved to Peñarol in 1972 . Here he was able to celebrate winning the Uruguayan championship three times (1973, 1974, 1975). From 1977 to the end of his career in 1984 he still played for the Chilean clubs Everton (1977), O'Higgins (1978-1981) and Arturo Fernández Vial (1982-1984).
National team
In the Uruguayan national team he made his debut on February 10, 1971 and completed a total of five international matches by April 28, 1976. He didn't score a goal. He took part in the 1975 Copa America with the Uruguayan team .
Coaching career
In his coaching career he was in charge of the Chilean national football team for three terms (1993, 1996–2001 and 2005–2007). He was the Chilean trainer at the 2007 Copa America . There his team failed in the quarterfinals . In addition, he led La Roja to take part in the 1998 World Cup , where his team was eliminated in the round of 16 against Brazil, and with it he secured the bronze medal at the 2000 Summer Olympics in Sydney and also looked after them during the World Cup. Qualified for the 2006 tournament. Between 2003 and 2004 he was less successful in the selection of Bolivia . As club coaching stations for him are Arturo Fernández Vial (1984 to 1988), O'Higgins (1988 to 1991), Unión Española (1992), the Mexican club Cruz Azul , which he coached in the 1992/93 season up to the 17th matchday , Unión Española (1993 to 1996) and Cobreloa (2002 to 2003 and 2004 to 2005) again. With Unión Española he won the Copa Chile in 1992 and 1993 . At his first stop in Cobreloa, he and his team won the Torneo Apertura 2003. In September 2007, he took over the training management at the club Everton , which was in danger of relegation at the time, and led the club to the semi-series championship in Torneo Apertura 2008. After his mid-October 2010 ending time at Everton, he again occupied the coaching chair Cobreloas from December 2010. Equipped with a two-year contract, his renewed term of office with the Chileans ended in April 2012 after he had previously announced that he would not extend his contract and his team was also in a sporting crisis. In May 2012 he signed as successor to Carlos Ischias with the Ecuadorian club Deportivo Quito . About three months and six completed games later, however, he left office there at the end of July 2012. In January 2014 he again took over the coaching position at Everton in Chile. His tenure there ended after he could not avoid the club's relegation to Primera B , in May of the same year. From October 14, 2014, he worked as a trainer at Deportes Iquique , whose team was penultimate in the 2014 Apertura. In September 2015, a coaching activity with the Chileans ended.
