history

The beginnings and the quick path to success

The club was founded in 1977 in Calama , a city in northern Chile and the second largest city in the Antofagasta region after Antofagasta . The association founded on January 7, 1977 called itself CD Cobreloa, which is due to a combination of the Spanish word for copper (cobre) and the word Loa , derived from the name of the largest river in Chile, the Río Loa . CD Cobreloa managed to establish itself very quickly in the upper areas of the Primera División Chiles. Cobreloa started in the second Chilean football league, the Segunda División. In the very first season, the club managed to move up to the Primera División as fourth behind Coquimbo Unido, CSD Rangers and CD Malleco Unido, after the promotion playoffs were victorious.

While the other two promoted Coquimbo Unido and CSD Rangers had to go back to the second division in the first season, CD Cobreloa was immediately able to achieve a second place in the first division, at the end of the season they were four points behind CD Palestino , that so that Chilean football champion was. In the following season a second place was achieved again, this time behind CSD Colo-Colo , the most successful Chilean football club to date. The qualification for the Copa Libertadores failed, however, you could not prevail in the playoffs against CD O'Higgins from Rancagua and CF Universidad de Chile . Also in 1978 Cobreloa could not qualify for the most important competition in South American club football.

National titles and Libertadores finals

In the 1980 season, the club won the Chilean football championship for the first time. In the Primera División a first place was occupied with three points ahead of CF Universidad de Chile. For the first time Cobreloa took part in the Copa Libertadores . At the tournament the following year they were in the group stage in a group with Universidad de Chile and the Peruvian representatives Sporting Cristal and Atlético Torino first, which entitled to participate in the second group stage. There Cobreloa met the two traditional Uruguayan clubs Nacional Montevideo and CA Peñarol , both winners of the Copa Libertadores several times, and surprisingly won three of four games, only against last year's winner Nacional Montevideo Cobreloa once played a 2-2 draw. With this first place, CD Cobreloa qualified for the final, where they met the Brazilian representative Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . In front of 94,000 spectators in the legendary Maracanã Stadium in Rio de Janeiro, Cobreloa was defeated on November 13, 1981 against the team to later world stars like Zico or Tita with 1: 2, where Zico managed a brace and Víctor Merello met for CD Cobreloa. The second leg took place at the Estadio Nacional de Chile in Santiago , as Cobreloa's home stadium, the Estadio Municipal de Calama with its 20,000 seats, was too small for a final game. Cobreloa surprisingly won the second leg 1-0 against Flamengo and again forced a play-off with a goal from Víctor Merello. This was won 2-0 by Flamengo in Montevideo , with Zico again scoring twice.

In the 1981 season Cobreloa was second behind CSD Colo-Colo, but still managed to qualify for the Copa Libertadores , as they prevailed in the playoffs against CF Universidad de Chile, Naval de Talcahuano and Unión Española . The Copa Libertadores 1982 was again very successful for Cobreloa. In the first group stage they were first in a group with Colo-Colo and the Ecuadorian representatives LDU Quito and Barcelona SC Guayaquil . Also in the second group phase they were able to prevail again, this time against Club Olimpia from Paraguay's capital Asunción and the Colombian club Deportes Tolima . In the final, CD Cobreloa met CA Peñarol from Montevideo, Uruguay's capital. At the Estadio Centenario Cobreloa reached a goalless draw, which was a good starting position for the second leg in Santiago de Chile. There, however, the team of coach Vicente Cantatore lost 1-0 to Peñarol. which won the Copa Libertadores for the fourth time. In the same year Cobreloa was able to win the national championship for the second time, it achieved a first place with four points ahead of CSD Colo-Colo. 1985 Cobreloa was champion with two points ahead of Everton CD again Viña del Mar .

Time of few successes

After CD Cobreloa became champion in 1985, a long time followed without any notable success, which was only interrupted by the championship titles of 1988 and 1992. In the year after the championship of 1985 they only finished third, but after playoffs against CD Palestino, CD Cobresal and CD Huachipato they still managed to qualify for the Copa Libertadores 1987 . Cobreloa almost made it into the final again, but they only failed because of the one goal worse goal difference to the Colombian club América de Cali , which took first place and was thus entitled to participate in the final, but then lost it to CA Peñarol. The following year failed to qualify for the Libertadores Cup. Cobreloa finished second in the league, but had to admit defeat CSD Colo-Colo in the playoffs. In 1988 Cobreloa was again Chilean football champions after three years, three points ahead of CD Cobresal. In the Copa Libertadores 1989 , for which they had qualified, Cobreloa reached the quarter-finals, where they were eliminated in the only second knockout system against the Uruguayan representative Danubio FC .

In 1989 CD Cobreloa was third, in 1990 only seventh, in 1991 sixth, all three times the club missed participation in the Copa Libertadores. It wasn't until 1992 that one could celebrate another success. At the national level, CD Cobreloa won the Chilean football championship two points ahead of CSD Colo-Colo. You could also take part in the Copa Libertadores 1993 . At the tournament they only barely survived the group phase, in a group with CD Universidad Católica and the Bolivian teams Club Bolívar and Club San José they came third and played in the round of 16 against Club Cerro Porteño from Asunción, where Cobreloa 1: 1 and 0 : 2 failed. The opponent, however, made it to the semi-finals, where he was eliminated from the eventual winners FC São Paulo . For a long time this was CD Cobreloa's last appearance in continental football. After a few years in the upper midfield of the Primera División, 1999 was the first time to qualify for the Copa Libertadores. At the Copa Libertadores 2000 , however, the end came after the preliminary round with a last place in a group with Club Bolívar, the Brazilian club Atlético Mineiro and CA Bella Vista from Uruguay.

Three more championship titles and current developments

At the beginning of the new millennium, CD Cobreloa became more successful again. In 2000 they finished second in the Primera División, nine points behind Colo-Colo. They were eligible to play for the Copa Libertadores 2001 and reached the round of 16 at the tournament, where they were eliminated from Argentina by CA Rosario Central . Two years later, CD Cobreloa became Chilean football champions for the first time in eleven years. In the meanwhile run Apertura Clausura system with two half-series, each of which is considered a separate championship, the club won the final against CSD Colo-Colo 4-0 and 0-0 and won the championship for the sixth time. The Torneo Clausura 2003 was also victorious, the final was won again against Colo-Colo. In the Torneo Apertura 2004 Cobreloa had another chance to defend their title, but failed in the final at CF Universidad de Chile on penalties after the return leg went without a winner. CD Cobreloa was then able to win the Clausura competition in 2004, and Unión Española was defeated 3-1 and 0-0 in the final. This title win is the last for Cobreloa to this day.

Only in 2006 did CD Cobreloa reappear when they almost reached the championship finals again. In the semifinals, Colo-Colo turned out to be too difficult an opponent. In Torneo Apertura 2008 CD Cobreloa even finished only fifteenth in the table and had to fear for the first relegation from the Primera División. With a good Clausura, in which you came back to the semifinals and failed to Colo-Colo, Cobreloa prevented relegation. In recent years, CD Cobreloa has established itself in the midfield of the Primera División. In the single-track 2010 season, they finished fourteenth and only barely escaped relegation.
