Copa Sudamericana 2012
The Copa Sudamericana 2012 was the 11th edition of the second most important South American football competition for club teams, which was also known as the "Copa Bridgestone Sudamericana" due to the sponsorship of the tire manufacturer Bridgestone . For the first time, 47 teams from the 10 member associations of CONMEBOL , including the defending champion Universidad de Chile, took part. Argentina had six and Brazil eight participants as usual; the other eight countries this time four participants each in the competition. As before, this was played in the second half of the year.
mode
As in the previous year, there were two rounds before the round of 16. However, due to the increase in the number of participants, this time in the first round the eight countries (with the exception of Argentina and Brazil) with their four teams each started completely in the first round. The participants from Argentina and Brazil only started in the 2nd round, defending champion Universidad de Chile only in the second round. As usual, the competition was held from the first round to the final in a pure knockout system with a return game. In the event of a tie for points and goals , the away goal rule applied . If the number of goals scored away from home was the same, a penalty shoot-out followed immediately after the second leg . The away goals rule did not apply in the final. If the goal difference had been the same after the first and second leg, there would have been overtime and then possibly a penalty shoot-out.
1 round
Participants were four teams each from eight countries in South America, with the exception of the teams from Argentina and Brazil. The first legs took place between July 24 and August 2, the second legs between August 8 and 22, 2012.

Return leg
The second leg was canceled at half-time when the score was 2-0 for São Paulo FC . The reason for this was brawls between the players on the field and later in the changing rooms. CA Tigre coach Néstor Gorosito also accused the Brazilian police officers of beating his players and threatening them with weapons, in an attempt to defuse the situation. CA Tigre then refused to play for the second half. Despite protests from CONMEBOL, the game was rated in favor of São Paulo FC.
