Rogério Mücke Ceni (born January 22, 1973 in Pato Branco , Paraná ) is a former Brazilian soccer goalkeeper .

Career

society

Rogério began his career in 1987 with Sinop FC in Mato Grosso and moved to São Paulo FC in September 1990 as the second goalkeeper behind Zetti . He made his debut on June 25, 1993 and has since played 1,141 games for the club (as of May 3, 2014) . With his 618th game he became the record player in São Paulo on July 28, 2005. In this game against Atlético Mineiro , he wore a shirt with the number 618 on his back.

On September 7, 2011, he played his 1000th game for São Paulo in front of over 60,000 fans. Opponent Atlético Mineiro could be defeated 2-1.

With São Paulo he won the Copa Libertadores three times and was FIFA Club World Champion in Japan in 2005 when his team beat Liverpool 1-0 in the final . He was named Most Valuable Player of the Tournament. On November 9, 2012, he announced that he had renewed his expiring contract for another year. The contract, which finally ran until December 31, 2013, was then extended for another year. Since October 2014 he holds the record for the most victories by a football player. With his 590th win, he surpassed Ryan Giggs' previous record .

After playing a total of 1256 games for São Paulo FC and scoring 131 goals, he ended his career as an active player in December 2015.

National team

With the national team he won the Confederations Cup in 1997 in Saudi Arabia and the 2002 World Cup in Japan / South Korea. However, he was not used in both tournaments. At the 2006 World Cup in Germany , he came on as a substitute in the 82nd minute in a 4-1 victory in the group game against Japan: his only appearance at the World Cup. He remained clean. At the 2002 tournament he was overshadowed by Marcos , and in 2006 he was a substitute for Dida .

Trainer

Sao Paulo FC

On November 24th it was announced that Ceni will take over the coaching position at São Paulo FC from 2017 . On January 20, during the friendly against CA River Plate , he headed the São Paulo team in his first game as a coach. He was dismissed on July 3, 2017 after his club finished seventeenth in the 2017 championship round on matchday 11 with a relegation rank.

Fortaleza and Cruzeiro

On November 10th, he received a contract to train the Fortaleza EC team from the 2018 season. With the club he was able to win the Série B 2018 and celebrate promotion with the club. At the end of November, Fortaleza announced that it had renewed with Ceni for the 2019 season. With victories in the national championship of Ceará 2019 and the Copa do Nordeste 2019, Ceni had led the club to three titles in six months.

On August 11, 2019, Fortaleza announced that Ceni would be leaving the club. He moved to league competitor Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte , who had separated from Mano Menezes four days earlier . Despite a contract that ran until the end of 2020, Ceni only remained Cruzeiro's coach for 47 days. Ceni was then offered his position at Fortaleza EC again. He signed a contract until the end of 2019.

Rogério Ceni had a very strong right foot and was an excellent free kick and penalty taker . He has scored 131 competitive goals throughout his career, 69 of them by penalty and 62 by free kick. Even after the end of his career, Ceni is still considered the most dangerous goalkeeper in the world, ahead of José Luis Chilavert (63 goals scored). On August 3, 2008, he managed his only brace in the league game against Vasco da Gama . He scored all of his goals for São Paulo FC, but was unsuccessful in his appearances for the Brazilian national team.
