Osvaldo Giroldo Júnior , usually called Juninho Paulista , (born February 22, 1973 in São Paulo ) is a former Brazilian soccer player . He was in the squad of the Brazilian world championship team from 2002. His nickname Juninho Paulista is derived from the Júnior - Juninho is a common Brazilian cuteness of Júnior - and his hometown São Paulo (Paulo = Paulista).

Club career

Juninho can be described as a "wandering bird". During his career he changed clubs a total of nine times and played for eight different clubs in Europe and South America . He received his first professional contract with São Paulo FC in 1993, but after only two years moved to the English premier club Middlesbrough FC , for which he played five years with an interruption. Other European stations were Atlético Madrid and Celtic Glasgow . In South America he was active for a total of four clubs. In addition to São Paulo FC, he played for CR Vasco da Gama , SE Palmeiras and Flamengo Rio de Janeiro . For the latter, he wore the club jersey for the second time. The 2007/08 season he played for the Australian club Sydney FC , but received no new contract offer from Sydney.

Juninho played a total of 50 times for the Brazilian national soccer team and scored five goals. In the mid-1990s he wore the number 10 jersey several times. He was close friends with his national team colleague Edmundo , until he hit him in the face during an argument.

He celebrated his greatest success during the 2002 World Cup in Japan and South Korea . He played in five of the seven possible games and also had a short stint in the final when the Brazilian team beat the German side 2-0.

During his time at Middlesbrough FC , he was nicknamed TLF (The Little Fella). This name is due to its height of only 1.67 m. He is still very popular with Boro fans and is considered one of the best players in recent years.
