Selsfors is a dam in north-east Sweden near Skellefteå on the Skellefteälven .

Wall and factory

On April 7, 1937, the city decided to build the dam, and in March 1941 the first groundbreaking took place. It is a 21 m high and 200 m long masonry pier dam, which was completed in 1943. The Selfors power plant operated by Skellefteå-Kraft has a power plant expansion capacity of 61 MW and the annual working capacity is 265 GWh.

bad luck

The dam of the Selsfors dam in Sweden broke on November 12, 1943 . The date is also given in the sources as November 9, 1943. The normal water level was 20 m high, at failure it was 18.2 m.

When the reservoir was first filled , cracks and water losses occurred. Four and a half hours before the break, the water slowly began to seep through the foundations. The phenomenon known as " piping " then led to ever increasing seepage and the washing out of the fluvioglacial sand underground. The dam finally collapsed six hours after the foundation was washed away. The storage volume of 1.8 million cubic meters flowed away without harming people. The wall was then completed in 1944.
