Rivaldo , with full name Rivaldo Vítor Borba Ferreira (born April 19, 1972 in Paulista ), is a former Brazilian soccer player who last played for the Brazilian team Mogi Mirim EC , he is also the club's president. Rivaldo was one of the best and most dangerous midfielders in the world between 1995 and 2002 and was a member of the Brazilian national team , with which he became world champion in 2002. His sporting achievements were reflected in the award of the Ballon d'Or for European Footballer of the Year and the election of FIFA World Player of the Year 1999.

Life

Rivaldo was born in Paulista , Pernambuco state , and grew up in great poverty. The malnutrition affected his physical appearance. He lost teeth and had bow legs . A successful career as a professional athlete initially seemed unusual. At the age of 16, Rivaldo lost his father in a traffic accident. However, he did not let himself be dissuaded from his path and began his professional career at the age of 19 in his hometown Paulista. Rivaldo is a descendant of German emigrants from the Münsterland Südlohn .

Club career

Rivaldo played in his career with Paulistano FC (1989–1990), Santa Cruz FC (1991), Mogi-Mirim (1992–1993), Corinthians São Paulo (1993–1994), Palmeiras São Paulo (1994–1996) Deportivo La Coruña ( 1996–1997), FC Barcelona (1997–2002), AC Milan (2002– November 2003), Cruzeiro Belo Horizonte (January – February 2004).

After his beginnings in Brazil, Deportiva La Coruña signed him in 1996 . There he was supposed to replace Bebeto, who had migrated to Flamengo . After 21 competitive goals in one season, he moved to FC Barcelona, where he was supposed to compensate for Ronaldo's departure . There he had his most successful time: in 1998 and 1999 Rivaldo became Spanish champions with the Catalans. In 1999 he was named FIFA World Player of the Year by both FIFA and France Football magazine . After winning the 2002 World Cup, Rivaldo joined AC Milan. There he lost his regular place to the up-and-coming talent Kaká , but won the Champions League. From the 2004/05 season he played for the Greek football club Olympiacos Piraeus . On May 12, 2007, Rivaldo terminated his contract with Piraeus with immediate effect because he had been offered a new contract with drastic salary cuts.

Rivaldo has been under contract with AEK Athens since May 2007, and in August 2008 he moved to Bunjodkor Tashkent . In January 2011 Rivaldo moved to the Brazilian second division club Mogi Mirim EC and also became president of the club. From this he was sold in the same month to São Paulo FC , where he signed a contract until the end of the year with the option of an extension for another season.

After his contract with Mogi Mirim EC expired, Rivaldo negotiated with the Angolan club Kabuscorp FC do Palanca in January 2012 . After the sports medical examination on January 13, 2012, Rivaldo signed a one-year contract with the Girabola Club Kabuscorp . In the 2012 season he was the third top scorer in the league with eleven goals in 21 games and was voted best foreign player. In early November 2012, Rivaldo announced that it would not renew his contract with Kabuscorp. However, he is trying to get a permanent residence permit for Angola in order to continue to support the social projects for children that he supports.

In January 2013, the Brazilian second division club AD São Caetano Rivaldo signed. There he signed a contract for the 2013 season until the end of December 2013.

In March 2014, Rivaldo announced the end of his playing career.

National team

In 1993 he played for the Seleção for the first time. In his first match he scored the 1-0 winner against Mexico. He was not taken to the 1994 World Cup in the USA, but two years later he went to the Olympic Games in the USA. With Brazil's team he won the bronze medal. Rivaldo was made the scapegoat for the semi-final defeat against Nigeria and removed from the national team by coach Mário Zagallo .

Rivaldo returned to the national team a year later and won the Confederations Cup in 1997 . He took part in the 1998 World Cup in France. There he scored three goals, two of them in the quarter-finals against Denmark. Rivaldo also scored in the semi-finals on penalties against the Netherlands. With Brazil he was runner-up in the world championship. At the Copa América 1999 Rivaldo was one of the top performers. Although he was used in midfield, he was named the tournament's top scorer and Most Valuable Player with five goals . Brazil won the tournament.

Despite being one of the best players of his generation, he was often used as a scapegoat and booed by Brazilian fans. The hostility was in part such that Rivaldo had considered resigning. The qualification for the 2002 World Cup was not easy either.

The World Cup tournament was the highlight of his career. Brazil won every game and took their fifth title. Rivaldo is one of the best players in the tournament. In the first game against Turkey, however, Rivaldo was conspicuously unsportsmanlike when he faked a head injury with a play, which provoked his Turkish opponent Hakan Ünsal to be sent off . This action was punished with a heavy fine. In the following games he formed the core of the successful Selecao with Ronaldo, Ronaldinho and Roberto Carlos. All four were elected to the World Cup All-Star Team after the tournament. Rivaldo scored five times and prepared the two winning goals in the final against Germany.
