The 1997 FIFA World Player of the Year (then still FIFA World Player ) was chosen on January 12, 1998 at Disneyland Paris . It was the seventh award of the “ World Footballer of the Year ” award introduced by the FIFA World Cup in 1991 . The winner of the award was the Brazilian Ronaldo .

Voting mode

The winner was determined by a vote among 121 national coaches from around the world. They each named the three best footballers in their opinion, although none of the three were allowed to come from their own country. An entry in first place brought five points, a second place three points, the third place one point. Then the points were added.
