Leonardo Nascimento de Araújo , short Leonardo (born September 5, 1969 in Niterói ), is a former Brazilian football player and coach and sports director . Since 2008 he has also had Italian citizenship . Since July 1, 2019, he has been working again as sports director at PSG .
Player career
societies
In 1987, at the age of 17, Leonardo began his career in Rio de Janeiro with Flamengo . In his first season he won the Brazilian championship. In 1990 he moved to São Paulo , where Telê Santana was the coach . Here too he was able to achieve the championship. After a two-year stint at the Spanish FC Valencia in 1991 and 1992, he moved from São Paulo FC to the Japanese first division club Kashima Antlers in 1993 , where he stayed until 1996. After a season at Paris Saint-Germain , he moved to AC Milan for four seasons in 1997 .
In 2001, Leonardo returned to São Paulo FC, and a year later he played another season with his home club Flamengo Rio de Janeiro. In 2003, Leonardo ended his active football career at AC Milan, for which he only played one game.
National team
Leonardo made his debut in the Brazilian national soccer team on October 17, 1990 against Chile . He took part in the 1994 World Cup in the United States , was no longer involved in Brazil's title win after the round of 16 - after he played all group matches over the full game distance - because after a brutal elbow check against Tab Ramos in the round of 16 for the rest of the tournament has been blocked. Four years later, at the 1998 World Cup in France , he was an integral part of the team and played all seven tournament games as a regular player.
Together with the national team, he also won the 1997 Copa America and the 1997 Confederations Cup . Leonardo made 60 international matches for the Seleção between 1990 and 2001 , scoring eight goals.

Career as a trainer and sports director
AC Milan
After the end of his career, Leonardo initially worked as a scout and consultant for AC Milan, and from 2008 he was Technical Director there. On May 31, 2009 he was appointed the club's new coach, replacing Carlo Ancelotti . After finishing third in the 2009/10 season, Leonardo was fired.
Inter Milan
On December 24, 2010 it was announced that Leonardo had signed a contract with Inter Milan until the summer of 2012 . He succeeded Rafael Benítez . On July 1, 2011, Inter Milan and Leonardo agreed to terminate the contract.
PSG
On July 13, 2011 he was presented as the new sports director at the French first division club Paris Saint-Germain . There he resigned after being banned from the association for 13 months.
Antalyaspor
On September 28, 2017, the Turkish first division club Antalyaspor announced the commitment of Leonardo. After about two months he resigned from his position after persistent failure to succeed.
