In Brazil's group B, the three-time world champion lived up to his role as a favorite; especially the storm duo Romario and Bebeto convinced. Carlos Alberto Parreira's team won against Russia and Cameroon, while the defensive Swedes drew against the Brazilians in the last group game. Sweden, which started the tournament rather moderately, moved into the second team in the round of 16. Russia could only convince in the last group game. Oleg Salenko was the first and only player in World Cup history to score five times in one game. For the Russians, the first World Cup after the collapse of the Soviet Union ended after the preliminary round. Cameroon was unable to match the performance of the 1990 World Cup. Old star Roger Milla made a record in the game between Cameroon and Russia, which was ultimately insignificant for the rest of the tournament. At the age of 42 he was the oldest player in World Cup history to score a goal.

Brazil was also able to prevail against the Swedes in the semi-finals. For a long time no goal was scored until star striker Romario prevailed with a solo against the otherwise tightly staggered Swedish defense and scored the 1-0 in the 80th minute. Sweden did not equalize in the remaining ten minutes.

The final between Brazil and Italy was characterized by very strong defensive tactics by the Italians, who apparently speculated from the outset on a penalty shoot-out against the technically very strong Brazilians. After no goal was scored during regular time and the following overtime, the Brazilians had better nerves on penalties. Experienced players such as Baresi, Massaro and Roberto Baggio, whose penalty went over Taffarel's goal, failed in their attempt to bring the world title to Italy for the fourth time. While Marcio Santos missed the Brazilians' first penalty, Romario, Branco and Dunga scored and secured the 3-2 victory for the Brazilian selection's fourth world title.
