This article covers the Brazilian national football team at the 2018 World Cup . Record world champion Brazil was the only South American team to qualify early and as the first team ever to qualify. The team took part for the 21st time and remains the only team that was not missing from any final round.
qualification
The team qualified through the qualification of the South American football association CONMEBOL .
Games
Brazil started the qualification under national coach Dunga , who took office for the second time after the 2014 World Cup. The record world champion had to qualify against the other nine South American CONMEBOL members in an everyone against everyone round with home and away games. The first four teams could qualify directly and the fifth best team via the intercontinental playoffs against the winner of the Oceania qualification. Brazil won twelve of the 18 qualifying games, drew five times and only lost the first game. The first victim of this defeat was goalkeeper Jefferson , who was replaced in the next game by newcomer Alisson , who then also played the remaining qualifying games and conceded no goal ten times. But Dunga did not stay long at his post either. After being eliminated in the group stage of the Copa América Centenario 2016 , he was sacked by the Brazilian Football Association . His successor was Tite , who until then had only coached club teams. Although he continued to rely on the tribe already nominated by Dunga, in the first game under his direction he sent the 19-year-old Gabriel Jesus into the race, who contributed to the gold medal win at the 2016 Olympic Games together with five other players who were in the qualification and contributed three goals along the way. He justified the trust with his first two international A goals and was the Brazilians' top scorer in qualifying with a total of seven goals. In the second game he gave another newcomer the chance with the 28-year-old Taison , who only got another two-minute short stint in the other games. Only in the last game against Chile was another newcomer, goalkeeper Ederson .
A total of 37 players were used in the 18 games, seven of them only once, including the former world footballer Kaká in the second game. No player was used in all games. Dani Alves , Miranda , who was also the captain of several games, and Willian played 17 games . Dani Alves had to pause after the second yellow card and played his 100th international match on March 23, 2017 in a 4-1 win against Uruguay. Neymar celebrated another anniversary on November 10, 2016 in a 3-0 win over Argentina, in which he scored his 50th international goal. In addition to Gabriel Jesus, there were other players who scored their first international goals in qualifying: Lucas Lima on November 13, 2015 in a 1-1 draw against Argentina, Renato Augusto and Filipe Luís on November 17, 2015 in a 3-0 win against Peru and Miranda on September 6, 2016 in a 2-1 win against Colombia. A total of 14 players scored for Brazil.

Finals
Group draw
Venues and quarters (blue / italic) of the Brazilian team |
For the draw of the qualifying groups on December 1st, Brazil was assigned to Pot 1 and could therefore not be drawn into a group with world champions Germany, vice world champions Argentina, European champions Portugal or host Russia. In addition, the Brazilians could not be drawn from any of the other South American teams. The team to score in the Group E on Switzerland , Serbia and Costa Rica , the two former world champion switched off at the last World Cup. The Brazilians met Switzerland in the preliminary round of the first home World Cup in 1950, where they parted 2-2 at the first meeting. There were also three wins, two draws and two defeats - the last in the last game in 2013 - in friendly matches. There was a victory against Serbia in a preparatory game just before the 2014 World Cup. Yugoslavia, one of the two predecessor teams of the Serbs, Brazil met four times in World Cup tournaments (1: 2 in the preliminary round in 1930, Brazil's first World Cup game, 2 : 0 in the preliminary round of the 1950 World Cup, 1: 1 a.s. in the preliminary round of the 1954 World Cup, after which Brazil was second in the group by drawing lots and 0: 0 in the opening game of the 1974 World Cup). There were also other special games against Yugoslavia, e.g. B. a 4-8 defeat in 1934, the Brazilians' international match with the highest number of goals and the only defeat with eight goals conceded, and in 1971 a 2-2 in Pelé's last international match . Costa Rica were opponents in the World Cup preliminary rounds in 1990 (1: 0) and 2002 (5: 2) and at the Copa America in 2004 (4: 1). There were also six wins in friendly matches and one loss at the 1960 Pan American Championship, where Brazil had used inexperienced players.
Should Brazil be group winners or runners-up, the team would face a group F team with defending champions Germany in the round of 16. If Brazil and Germany are both group winners or second, they can only meet in the final (or match for third place).
Brazil has played against the USSR and Russia several times in Moscow, but not in the other two preliminary round venues.
