The Panamanian national soccer team took part in a final round for the first time at the 2018 World Cup and was the eleventh CONCACAF member to qualify for a World Cup final.

qualification

The team qualified through the CONCACAF qualifying games for the World Cup in Russia .

Games

Panama didn't have to qualify until the fourth round. Together with Costa Rica, the team prevailed there against Haiti and Jamaica. In the fifth round they both faced Honduras, Mexico, Trinidad and Tobago and the USA. Panama only qualified on the last day of the match with a 2-1 win against the already qualified Costa Ricans. Costa Rica took the lead 1-0 in the 36th minute. Gabriel Torres in the 52nd minute and Román Torres in the 88th minute then ensured Panama's victory. They also benefited from the fact that the USA team, which had previously been placed in front of them, lost their away game against bottom of the table Trinidad and Tobago 2-1. With this, Panama had achieved third place with 9:10 goals in front of the team from Honduras with the same number of points, but who had an even worse goal difference, and thus directly qualified for the World Cup finals. Honduras later failed in the intercontinental playoff against Asian champions Australia .

In total, national coach Hernán Darío Gómez , who took over the team in February 2014, deployed 32 players, the majority of whom also took part in the CONCACAF Gold Cup 2015 and CONCACAF Gold Cup 2017 as well as the Copa América Centenario 2016 . No player was used in all 16 qualifiers. Alberto Quintero made 15 appearances, Armando Cooper , Aníbal Godoy and record national player Gabriel Gómez each recorded 14 appearances . Amílcar Henríquez , who died on April 15, 2017 from injuries sustained in a shootout in front of his house, played eight games - 18 days after his last appearance in qualifying. The top scorers were Gabriel Torres with three goals and Abdiel Arroyo , record scorer Luis Tejada and Román Torres with two goals each. A total of nine players scored 14 qualifying goals for Panama. Panama also benefited from two own goals. Panama failed to score in six of 16 games.

In the qualifying matches, the following players made their 100th international match: Blas Pérez on November 13, 2015 against Jamaica, Román Torres on November 15, 2016 against Mexico and Luis Tejada on March 24, 2017 against Trinidad and Tobago.
