This article covers the Uruguayan national soccer team at the 2018 World Cup . Uruguay qualified as the second best team in the South American qualification on the last day of the match, and for the first time since 1990 without the detour of the intercontinental playoffs. The team took part for the 13th time and since 2010 without interruption.
qualification
The team qualified through the qualification of the South American football association CONMEBOL .
Games
Uruguay relied on national coach Óscar Tabárez , who has coached the team since 2006, in qualifying . Since moving to the Copa America in 2015 was banned for three competitive matches, but lost in the first three games Assistant coach Celso Otero take the place on the bench. Of these three games, the first two were won, the third was lost in Ecuador. Then Tabárez was allowed to sit down on the bench again and his team defeated South American champions Chile 3-0. Of the next seven games, Uruguay then only lost the game in Argentina. Then came the second leg defeat in Chile at the end of 2016. Nevertheless, the team maintained second place in the table. In the first three games of 2017, however, only one point was achieved in the goalless draw against Argentina, so that the team fell back to third place and were only three points ahead of the sixth place before the last three games. A win in Paraguay brought back second place, but a goalless draw in bottom of the table Venezuela missed early qualification in the penultimate game, as the gap to sixth in the table was still three points. In the last game against Bolivia, which already had no chance of reaching the World Cup finals, the Uruguayans secured their ticket to the World Cup with a 4-2 win. Uruguayan players had scored all six goals, because Gastón Silva had put the Bolivians in the lead with an own goal and then captain Diego Godín ensured the final score with another own goal. Uruguay - which would have finished fourth even if it had been defeated - qualified for the first time since 1990 for the World Cup. In 2002, 2010 and 2014 Uruguay could only qualify in the intercontinental playoffs, in 1994 and 1998 the team failed in the South American qualification and in 2006 in the intercontinental playoffs.
A total of 32 players were used in the 18 games, four of them only once. No player was used in all 18 games. Goalkeeper Fernando Muslera made 17 appearances after he was forced to take a break after receiving the second yellow card. 16 missions had captain Diego Godín , who could also not be used once. Edinson Cavani , the top scorer in the South American qualification with ten goals, and Carlos Sánchez made 15 appearances, whereby Cavani could not be used once. Record goalscorer Luis Suárez was the Uruguayans' second top scorer in qualifying with five goals, which he scored in 13 games. A total of 12 players scored for Uruguay and they also benefited from an own goal by a Paraguayan. With 32 goals they were the most accurate team in South America after Brazil.
Cristian Rodríguez made his 100th international match in a goalless draw against Venezuela on October 5, 2017.
