Bor ( Russian Бор ) is a city in Russia . It has 78,058 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010) and is located in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast , east of Nizhny Novgorod on the opposite bank of the Volga .

history

The place was first mentioned as a suburb of Nizhny Novgorod in the 13th century. Originally it was called Weslomskaja Slobodka and was located one kilometer south of its current location. The village has been called Bor since the 14th century - an old Slavic name that means "coniferous forest" and reminds of the wooded surroundings of the place. Bor has had city status since 1938. Today Bor is also the center of one of the Oblast Rajons .

Bor's economic life is closely linked to neighboring Nizhny Novgorod; many of the local factories belong to Nizhny Novgorod companies. The most important Borer companies include a shipyard, a glass factory, wood processing and sawmills, food and textile factories.

Bor is connected to Nizhny Novgorod by an automobile bridge over the Volga and in this way also has a connection to the Russian M7 highway . The city also has a train station that is connected to the Trans-Siberian Railway via a branch line .

Since February 9, 2012, Bor has been connected to Nizhny Novgorod via the 3,661 m long Volga cable car Nizhny Novgorod , which overcomes the Volga with its longest span of 900 m between two 82 m high supports.
