The Volga cable car Nizhny Novgorod ( Russian: Нижегородская канатная дорога ) is a cable car that connects Nizhny Novgorod with the suburb of Bor on the other side of the Volga . It is the first aerial cableway in Russia for local public transport .

Many of Bor's industrial workers live in Nizhny Novgorod. The road and rail links between the two cities run over the only two Volga bridges around 7 km further upstream and are 24 km long. In rush hour traffic, this means a two-hour drive.

Nizhny Novgorod station

The 3661 m long gondola lift begins in Nizhny Novgorod on the high bank of the Volga in the immediate vicinity of a bus station. It first crosses the Grebnoy Canal with two supports . From there it climbs over a branch of the Volga to the first of two 82 m high pillars, which stand on four massive concrete foundations on an often flooded island. From there it floats in a 900 m long span across the main stream to the second high pillar on the other bank. The gondolas then cross the 1.6 km wide floodplain to the Bor station, which is on the outskirts of one of the city's major streets .

The trip with the eight-person gondolas takes 12 to 25 minutes. The gondolas are equipped with lighting and radio links. The operating hours are from 6:45 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. on weekdays (on Friday and Saturday until 10:00 p.m.) and from 9:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m. on Sundays and public holidays. Every Monday and Thursday there is an interruption from 10:45 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. to carry out maintenance work. In winter the gondola runs down to temperatures of minus 30 ° C.
