Sergach ( Russian Сергач ) is a town in the Nizhny Novgorod ( Russia ) with 21,386 inhabitants (October 14, 2010).

geography

The city is located about 150 km southeast of the oblast capital Nizhny Novgorod on the Pjana , a left tributary of the Sura, which flows into the Volga .

Sergach is the administrative center of the raion of the same name .

history

A place called Sergaevskaya appeared for the first time in Nizhny Novgorod administrative books from 1618. The name was probably derived from the Mordovian form Serga of the Russian name Sergei .

The first documentary mention of the village of Sergach comes from 1649.

In 1779 the town charter was granted as the administrative center of a district (Ujesds).

Culture and sights

In Sergach the Cathedral of the Icon of the Mother of God of Vladimir , or Vladimir Cathedral for short ( Владимирский собор / Vladimirsky sobor) from 1820 and the St. John's Church ( церковь Иоанна Милостивого / zerkogo ) from 1820 Ioanna Milost have been preserved. The station building from the beginning of the 20th century is practically in its original state.

The city has a local museum.

In the nearby village Andreevka stands an old mosque in Lopatino the Nikolai Church ( Никольская церковь / Nikolskaya Zerkow).

Economy and Infrastructure

In Sergatsch there are equipment manufacturing, food (sugar factories) and textile industries.

The city lies on the railway line Moscow - Arsamas - Kazan opened on this section in 1918 (route km 524).
