Tonkino ( Russian То́нкино ) is an urban-type settlement in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast in Russia with 5103 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

The place is about 200 km as the crow flies northeast of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast Administrative Center, about 15 km from the border with Kirov Oblast . It is located on the Jachta, a left tributary of the Usta tributary Waja.

Tonkino is the administrative center of Tonkinski Rajon and the seat of the municipality (gorodskoje posselenije) Rabotschi possjolok Tonkino, to which the villages Dwojeglasowo (6 km south), Jelchowka (2 km south-east), Kamennoje (3 km south-east), Lomnoje (5 km east) , Nowoje Tonkino (5 km southeast) and Schwezkoje (7 km south-southwest) belong.

history

The place was founded by the Old Orthodox and first mentioned in documents in 1710 (according to other sources in 1723). He belonged to the Ujesd Warnawin of the Kostroma governorate and from 1797 was the seat of a Volost .

In 1929 Tonkino became the administrative seat of a newly created Rajons named after him, which was temporarily dissolved shortly afterwards and newly created in 1936. Since 1972 the place has had the status of an urban-type settlement.

Tonkino is on the regional road 22K-0012, which branches off from the 22R-0159 Nizhny Novgorod - Shachunja (-  Jaransk ) near Arja not far from the small town of Uren and continues in a southerly direction via the neighboring district center Sharanga to the border of the Mari El republic , there in Direction Kilemary .

In Arja, a good 30 km north-west, on the Moscow  - Nizhny Novgorod - Kotelnitsch route, there is also the closest train station.
