history

A village in the place of today's city has been known since the 14th century.

In 1779 the place received the city charter as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) of the governorship of Nizhny Novgorod under the name Pjanski Perewos , but lost the administrative function again in 1798. The name roughly means transition over the Pjana .

The main occupation of the population in the 19th century was farming and making nets for fishing, mainly on the Caspian Sea .

Before 1926, the place lost its town charter due to the low population and was now considered a village settlement under the abbreviated, current name. In 1962 the place was given the status of an urban-type settlement and on January 15, 2001 renewed town charter.
