In various documents it was later also called Gorodets-na-Wolge ( Gorodets on the Volga ) or Gorodets-Radilov , since there were several places of this name in ancient Russia.
At the beginning of the 14th century Gorodets was the capital of a vassal principality, in 1341 it became the principality of Nizhny Novgorod. In 1408 the city was destroyed by troops of the Golden Horde under Edigü .
In the 17th century, not far from the remains of the old fortress, the Verkhnyaya Slobodka settlement was built , which was later called Gorodets based on the old town name. At the turn of the 18th and 19th centuries, the village was the center of Old Believer Orthodoxy ; In the course of the 19th century it developed into an important trade and handicraft center with grain trade, blacksmithing and casting, tannery, dyeing and gingerbread production.
In 1921 (according to other sources in 1922) town charter was granted.
