Lyskowo ( Russian Лысково ) is a city in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ( Russia ) with 21,880 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

The city is located about 90 km southeast of the oblast capital Nizhny Novgorod at the mouth of the Sundovik river into the Volga, which is dammed up here to form the Cheboksarsk reservoir .

Lyskowo is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .

history

The settlement of Lyskowo was first mentioned in 1410.

The old road from Moscow via Nizhny Novgorod to Kazan ran through Lyskowo . Because of this more favorable location compared to the administrative center of the then district ( Ujesds ) Makarjew on the other side of the Volga, a large part of the authorities was relocated to Lyskowo in the course of the 19th century, the importance of which grew, although Makarjew officially remained the district town.

In 1925 the Lyskowo Rajon was formed and the town was granted town charter as its new official administrative center.

Culture and sights

In Lyskowo, the Church of the Transfiguration of Christ ( Спасо-Преображенский собор / Spasso-Preobrazhensky sobor) from 1711 and the Church of the Resurrection ( Вознесенская церковь / Vozerkovnessenskaya) from 1838 zерковь.

In the nearby village Kirikowo which is Mary's Transfiguration Church ( Успенская церковь / Uspenskaja Zerkow) from 1692. On the hill Olenja Gora ( Hirschberg ) on the bank of the Volga have survived a fortress from the 14th to 16th century remains.

On the opposite bank of the Volga is the Makarjewo urban-type settlement with the important Makarios Scholtowodski Trinity Monastery , founded in 1435 .

The city has a local museum.

Economy and Infrastructure

In Lyskowo there are equipment and mechanical engineering as well as textile and food industries.

The city is located on the M7 Moscow – Nizhny Novgorod – KazanUfa highway (part of the European route 22 ).
