Wetluga ( Russian Ветлуга ) is a small town in the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast ( Russia ) with 8954 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
The city is located about 230 km northeast of the oblast capital Nizhny Novgorod on the right bank of the Vetluga of the same name , a left tributary of the Volga .
Wetluga is the administrative center of the Rajon of the same name .
history
The place was first mentioned in 1636 as the village Schulepnikowo . In the 18th century the wooden Church of the Resurrection (Russian zerkow Voskressenija ) was built and the village was called Verkhneje Voskressenije ( werchneje for upper , because there was another village of this name further downstream, today an urban-type settlement and district administrative center Voskressenskoje ).
On September 5, 1778, at the same time renaming after the name of the river, the town charter as the administrative center of a district ( Ujesds ) was initially granted to the Kostroma governorship .
The city has long been the most important trading center in the region around the middle reaches of the Wetluga ( Wetluschski krai ).

Economy and Infrastructure
In Wetluga there are companies in the timber industry as well as the food and textile industries.
The nearest train station is Uren about 50 kilometers south on the Moscow –Nizhny Novgorod– Kirov route . By Vetluga the road leads R157 Uren- SHARYA - Nikolsk - Veliky Ustyug - Kotlas .
