The Wetluga ( Russian Ветлуга , Mari Вӱтла ) is a 889 km long left tributary of the Volga in the European part of Russia .

The Wetluga rises near Leninskoje west of the city of Kirov in the oblast of the same name . Initially it flows mainly in east and north-easterly directions, but soon turns west.

It flows through the northeastern part of Kostroma Oblast , where it receives the Wochma . A few kilometers before Sharja , the Wetluga turns south. The Bolshaya Shanga joins before the city . A few kilometers after the confluence of the Neja , the Wetluga reaches the northeastern part of the Nizhny Novgorod Oblast .

At the town of Wetluga , the river turns southwest for several dozen kilometers before gradually turning to the southeast. It reaches the northwest border of the Republic of Mari El and takes the Juronga . Shortly afterwards the Wetluga flows into the Cheboksarsk reservoir of the Volga near Kosmodemjansk .
