List of cities in Russia |
Novocheboksarsk ( Russian Новочебоксарск , Chuvash Ҫӗнӗ Шупашкар / Cene Şupaşkar) is a large city with 124,097 inhabitants (14 October 2010) in the Russian republic of Chuvashia . It is located on the southern bank of the Volga , below the republic capital of Cheboksary, five kilometers away .
history
The city was built from 1960 and was originally a suburban settlement of Cheboksary. The reason for its establishment was the construction of the Cheboksary hydropower plant on the Cheboksarsk reservoir of the Volga in the 1960s. In 1965, the place then received the name Novocheboksarsk (literally about "New Cheboksary") and the city status. In 1971 Novocheboksarsk was administratively subordinate to the Chuvash ASSR , in 1983 its population already exceeded the limit of 100,000.
On March 2, 2008, at the same time as the presidential elections , a referendum on the unification of the two cities took place in Cheboksary and Novocheboksarsk. This plan failed, however, as 63% of the citizens of Cheboksary voted in favor, but only 38% of the residents of Novocheboksarsk.
