history

City Court of Kanasch

Kanasch emerged from 1891 as a station settlement called Schichrany (Шихраны), which was built on the railway line Moscow - Saransk - Kazan , which went into operation in 1893 . The original name of the place came from a neighboring village. In the 1910s, thanks to the train station, Schichrany was already a lively trading center with a large number of warehouses. However, only two buildings from the late 19th and early 20th centuries have survived in Kanasch: the water tower and the former teacher training college.

In 1920, both the station and the settlement were renamed Kanasch ; the Chuvash word means "council" or here in the ideological meaning " soviet ". Industrialization began here in the 1920s with the construction of a power station. In 1925 Kanasch, now numbering well over 2,000 inhabitants, received city rights.

With the establishment of a rail link to Cheboksary at the end of the 1930s, Kanasch became an important railway junction with a train station, which now served several routes and was therefore of military importance during the Second World War . In the post-war period, new industrial plants were built in Kanasch and the city's train station was rebuilt.

In 1958 there was an aircraft accident near Kanasch .
