Ziwilsk ( Russian Цивильск , Chuvash Ҫӗрпӳ / Çĕrpü) is a Russian city in the Autonomous Republic of Chuvashia within the Volga Federal District . It is the administrative center of Ziwilsk Rajons and has 13,479 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).
geography
Ziwilsk is located about 780 km east of Moscow and 33 km southeast of the republic capital Cheboksary in the Volga Heights at the confluence of the rivers Maly (Small) and Bolshoi (Big) Ziwil , which together form the Ziwil , a tributary of the Volga .
history
Ziwilsk appears for the first time in 1584 in an edict of the regent Boris Godunow , who had a fortress built at the union of Maly and Bolshoi Ziwil instead of a Chuvash (formerly Volga Bulgarian ) village , from which a settlement grew from 1590. In 1774 the place was occupied by rebels under Jemeljan Pugachev . In 1781 Ziwilsk was given the status of a district town .

Economy and Infrastructure
In the city there are food production plants and a brick factory . The city is connected to the rail network through the train station located 8 km southwest of the Michailowka settlement .
In the vicinity of Ziwilsk there is a 350 meter high transmission mast for broadcasting VHF and TV programs.
Attractions
In addition to some historic wooden buildings , the house of the Tolmachev merchant family (Дом Толмачёвых, 18th century) and the Trinity Church (Троицкий собор, 1734) are worth mentioning.
Monastery of Our Lady of Tikhvin
According to the founding legend , the citizenship is said to have donated this monastery in 1671 in thanks for the fact that the town had been spared from the occupation by the rebellious troops of Stenka Razin . A copy of the icon of Our Lady of Tikhvin , which was formerly located in the city's Trinity Church and was now kept in the newly founded monastery on Ascension Day , was held responsible for this miracle . The abbey remained of little importance, however, became state property in 1764 and fell into disrepair. It was not revived as a nunnery until 1870 and received its current patronage . Most of the buildings were rebuilt in the following decades; u. a. A monastery school was established in 1872 , which particularly took on the education of local Tschwash girls. In 1925 the monastery was dissolved and converted into a company premises. The complex has been restored since it was returned to the church in 1998.
