Schumerlja ( Russian Шумерля , Chuvash Ҫӗмӗрле / Çĕmĕrle) is a Russian city in the Autonomous Republic of Chuvashia within the Volga Federal District with 31,722 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). It forms an independent urban district and is also the administrative seat of the Schumerlja district .
geography
Schumerlja is located about 600 km east of Moscow and about 110 km southwest of the republic capital Cheboksary on the northern slope of the Volga Heights on the right bank of the Sura . The nearest town is Jadrin 51 km downstream north of Shumerlja.
history
The place was created in 1916 as a settlement at a railway station opened in 1918 on the Moscow - Kazan route . The Chuvash name Çĕmĕrle was adopted from a neighboring village and means "to roar, roar".
In the 1920s, the town's industrial development began with the construction of a timber combination , among other things , which supplied spare parts for armaments production during the Second World War . In 1937 Schumerlja, at that time already with around 15,000 inhabitants, received city rights .
In the post-war period, Shumerlia's industry and infrastructure continued to develop. The highest population of around 43,000 was reached at the beginning of the 1990s, since then it has fallen again by around 10,000. The city's coat of arms Shumerlyas was introduced in 1976 and symbolizes the mechanical engineering and wood industry in the town with the representation of a gear wheel and an oak leaf, while the blue wave alludes to the location on the Sura River.

Economy and Transport
The predominant branches of industry are chemistry, commercial vehicle and food production, and wood processing. Schumerlja has a landing stage on the Sura and a train station on the important railway line Moscow - Kazan .
