List of cities in Russia

Jadrin ( Russian Я́дрин , Chuvash Етӗрне Etĕrne ) is a small town in the Autonomous Republic of Chuvashia within the Volga Federal District ( Russia ). It is the administrative seat of the Jadrin district and has 9,614 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010).

geography

Jadrin is located about 680 km east of Moscow and about 75 km southwest of the republic capital Cheboksary on the left bank of the Sura .

history

Jadrin was first mentioned in 1590 as a fortified settlement and administrative center. In 1781 Jadrin received city rights and at the same time became the administrative seat of the Ujesd of the same name (since 1927 Rajon ).

Old coat of arms (1781)

On this occasion, Jadrin received its own coat of arms . The upper part of the divided shield showed the coat of arms of the governorship , later of the Kazan Governorate , to which Jadrin belonged until 1927: in silver a black, right-turned silant (a dragon-like Tatar mythical creature) with red wings and a golden crown. The contents of the lower half of the shield - red and black cannon balls piled up to form a tetrahedron - is based on a folk etymological interpretation of the city name, which one wanted to derive from Russian jadro ("cannon ball"). In fact, the name probably comes from the Chuvash first name Jetĕrne , which in Russian was first changed to Jadryn , then to Jadrin . When the coat of arms was revised in 1989, the Kazan Silant was replaced by a silver and gold ornamental pattern on a red background, which is borrowed from Chuvash folk art and in the middle of which the city was founded.
