Silant
The Silant ( Russian Зилант from Tatar yılan / елан "snake", Tatar name ajdaha-yılan "dragon snake " in Persian اژدها azhdahā "dragon"), also (corresponding to the English transcription of the Russian name) Zilant , is a winged snake with the front part of a dragon, a mythical creature that is part of Tatar and Russian folklore . It is mentioned in legends about the founding of the Tatar capital Kazan , has been its official symbol since 1730 and isdepictedin the flag and coat of arms of this city. As such, it is also a special type of representation of the dragon as a heraldic animal , similar to the wyvern . Despite its bird-like posture, it differsfrom the basilisk in its head, which is a dragon and not a bird's head, and also in its mythology , which has no relation to a bird's shape.
As an emblem of the millennium of Kazan in 2005 the lettering قازان qazan (in the historical Tatar alphabet İske imlâ ) in the form of a silant was chosen.
