Mariinsky Possad ( Russian Мариинский Посад Mariinskij Posad ; Chuvash Сӗнтӗрвӑрри Sĕntĕrvărri ; until 1856 Сундырь Sundyr ) is a Russian city in the Autonomous Republic of Chuvashia within the Volga Federal District . It is the administrative seat of the Mariinsky Posad Raion and has 9,088 inhabitants (as of October 14, 2010). The city is often called Marpossad (Марпосад) for short.
geography
The city is located on the right bank of the Kuibyshev reservoir at the mouth of the Sundyrka River , around 800 km east of Moscow and 28 km east of the republic capital Cheboksary . The nearest town is Novocheboksarsk , around 30 km west of Marpossad.
history
The village of Sundyr was first mentioned in 1620 and got its name after the river, now called Sundyrka , which flows into the Volga here . Its name is of pre-Chuvash origin and probably means "gorge in which water flows". In 1856, at the instigation of the local merchants, the settlement was renamed Mariinsky Posad by an ukase from Alexander II after Tsarina Maria Alexandrovna . At the same time, the place received city rights .

Economy, transport and attractions
In the city there are u. a. Building materials , mechanical engineering and food industries as well as a cable factory . Mariinsky Posad also has a river port on the Volga.
The sights of the small town include a. the Trinity Church (Троицкий собор, 1775; drastically changed in 1903) and the Church of Our Lady of Kazan (Казанская церковь, 1761; expanded in 1889).
