The Irion County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Mertzon .
geography
The county is located about 80 km west of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of 2,724 square kilometers with no significant body of water. The county is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Sterling County , Tom Green County , Schleicher County , Crockett County, and Reagan County .
history
Irion County was formed on March 7, 1889 from parts of Tom Green County. It was named after Robert Anderson Irion (1804-1861), a doctor and surveyor who was a member of the Senate of the Republic of Texas and her secretary of state in 1837/1838.
One structure in the county is listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of November 12, 2019, the Irion County Courthouse .

As of the 2000 census , Irion County had 1,771 people in 694 households and 523 families. The population density was 1 person per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 90.68 percent white, 0.40 percent African American, 0.79 percent Native American and 6.55 percent from other ethnic groups; 1.58 percent were descended from two or more races. 24.62 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 694 households, 32.4 percent had children or adolescents living with them. 64.8 percent were married couples living together, 6.6 percent were single mothers and 24.5 percent were non-families. 21.8 percent were single households and 11.2 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
26.7 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 4.7 percent between 18 and 24, 26.9 percent between 25 and 44, 26.1 percent between 45 and 64 and 15.6 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 100.3 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 99.4 males.
The median income for a household in the 37,500 US dollars , and the median income for a family was 45,458 US dollars. Males had a median income of $ 35,642 and females $ 20,395. The per capita income was $ 20,515. 8.3 percent of families and 8.4 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
