The Limestone County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The seat of the county administration ( County Seat ) is in Groesbeck .
geography
The county is northeast of the geographic center of Texas, about halfway to Louisiana and Arkansas . It has an area of 2417 square kilometers, of which 63 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Navarro County , Freestone County , Leon County , Robertson County , Falls County , McLennan County, and Hill County .
history
Limestone County was formed on April 11, 1846 from parts of Robertson County. The administrative organization was completed on August 18 of the same year. The name Limestone ("limestone") refers to the local occurrence of this type of rock.
Six structures and sites in the county are listed on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of March 15, 2020, including the Joseph E. Johnston Confederate Reunion Grounds , Booker T. Washington Emancipation Proclamation Park, and Texas Hall, Old Trinity University .

As of the 2000 census , Limestone County had 22,051 people in 7,906 households and 5,652 families. The population density was 9 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 70.75 percent white, 19.07 percent African American, 0.45 percent Native American, 0.12 percent Asian, 0.01 percent of residents from the Pacific island area and 8.10 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.49 percent were descended from two or more races. 12.97 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 7,906 households, 32.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 54.0 percent were married couples living together, 13.5 percent were single mothers, and 28.5 percent were non-families. 25.6 percent were single households and 13.8 percent had people aged 65 years or over. The average household size was 2.55 and the average family size was 3.04 people.
25.4 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 9.1 percent between 18 and 24, 26.4 percent between 25 and 44, 22.7 percent between 45 and 64 and 16.4 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 37 years. For every 100 females there were 103.2 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 100.8 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 29,366 , and the median income for a family is $ 36,924. Males had a median income of $ 28,069 versus $ 18,893 for females. The per capita income was $ 14,352. 14.4 percent of families and 17.8 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
