The Callahan County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Baird .
geography
The county is east of the geographic center of Texas and covers an area of 2,334 square kilometers, of which 7 square kilometers are water. It is bordered in a clockwise direction by the following counties: Shackelford County , Eastland County , Brown County , Coleman County , Taylor County, and Jones County .
history
Callahan County was formed from parts of Bexar County , Bosque County and Travis County on February 1, 1858 , and the administrative organization was completed on July 3, 1877. It was named after James Hughes Callahan , a soldier during the Texan Revolution .
Two of the county's structures are on the National Register of Historic Places (NRHP) as of October 16, 2018, the Robert E. Howard House and the Texas and Pacific Railway Depot .

As of the 2000 census , Callahan County had 12,905 people in 5,061 households and 3,750 families. The population density was 6 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 94.78 percent white, 0.22 percent African American, 0.63 percent Native American, 0.26 percent Asian, 0.05 percent from the Pacific island area and 2.70 percent from other ethnic groups Groups; 1.35 percent were descended from two or more races. 6.29 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.
Of the 5,061 households, 31.9 percent had children or young people living with them. 61.6 percent were married couples living together, 9.3 percent were single mothers and 25.9 percent were non-families. 23.3 percent were single households and 12.2 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.53 and the average family size was 2.97 people.
26.2 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 6.6 percent between 18 and 24, 24.9 percent between 25 and 44, 25.3 percent between 45 and 64 and 17.0 percent were 65 years of age or older. The average age was 40 years. For every 100 females there were 94.4 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 90.9 males.
The median income for a household in the county is $ 32,463 , and the median income for a family is $ 37,165. Males had a median income of $ 27,086 versus $ 19,720 for females. The per capita income was $ 15,204. 9.0 percent of families and 12.2 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
