The Dallam County is a county in the state of Texas of the United States . The county seat is in Dalhart .

geography

The county is located in the far northwest of Texas, in the Texas Panhandle , borders Oklahoma to the north and New Mexico to the west . It has an area of ​​3899 square kilometers, of which 1 square kilometer is water. It is bordered clockwise by the following counties: Cimarron County , the westernmost county of Oklahoma, Sherman County , Hartley County, and Union County, the northeasternmost county in New Mexico.

history

Dallam County was formed from parts of Bexar County on August 21, 1876 , and the administrative organization was completed on September 8, 1891. It was named after James Wilmer Dallam (1818–1847), a legal scholar and editor of legal literature.

The area was first settled around 1870, leading to the Red River War with the local Comanche and Kiowa in 1874 and 1875 . In 1900/01 the railroad company Chicago, Rock Island and Pacific Railroad built the route from Enid (Oklahoma) to Tucumcari , New Mexico , which runs through the county. The place where the rails met those of the Fort Worth and Denver Railroad was called Dalhart. The name is composed of the first letters of Dallam County and Hartley County, between which the place is located. Within a very short time, the small railroad junction became a handsome place and in 1903 the seat of the county administration.

As of the 2000 census , Dallam County had 6,222 people in 2,317 households and 1,628 families. The population density was 2 people per square kilometer. The racial the population was composed of 82.64 percent white, 1.64 percent African American, 0.90 percent Native American, 0.21 percent Asian and 12.41 percent from other ethnic groups; 2.20 percent were descended from two or more races. 28.38 percent of the population were Hispanic or Latino of any race.

Of the 2,317 households, 39.0 percent had children or young people living with them. 55.1 percent were married couples living together, 9.7 percent were single mothers and 29.7 percent were non-families. 26.2 percent were single households and 10.0 percent had people aged 65 or over. The average household size was 2.68 and the average family size was 3.24 people.

31.8 percent of the population was under 18 years old, 8.6 percent between 18 and 24, 28.8 percent between 25 and 44, 20.6 percent between 45 and 64 and 10.3 percent were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 31 years. For every 100 females there were 102 males and for every 100 females age 18 or over there were 101.3 males.

The median income for a household in the city is $ 27,946 , and the median income for a family is $ 33,558. Males had a median income of $ 27,244 versus $ 19,000 for females. The per capita income was $ 13,653. 11.3 percent of families and 14.1 percent of the population lived below the poverty line.
